Saturday SART ride. Just one of those rides where everything goes well. Rode up to PCH from Green River, hung a left on PCH and rode 5 miles and back

In the grand scheme of things, this is just a minor personal victory. Been trying to ride my little Godde Hill Loop in under an hour. It's only 15.2 miles long, but includes a single Cat 3 climb, (just barely a 3, according to the ToC climb classifications), about 1/3 way into ride. Been coming close and determined my final time would be a function of the direction and velocity of the wind and how I hit the signals. This time, minimal wind and better than normal luck with the signals.

Godde Hill Loop

For others wanting to do this little ride, leaving from Marie Kerr Park would be a good starting/finishing place. Either leave you car in the park parking lot or across the street in the Vons/strip mall parking lot. Going straight down Rancho Vista Blvd instead of by the golf course knocks a mile or so off the route, so under an hour would be fairly easy for most everyone.

A question about your heartrates

Those of you who have put up a lot of your rides, I noticed that you maintain a heartrate of around 160 bpm. Pretty impressive! On the one ride I posted, climbing the hill, I had a heartrate of about 150, but on the long, slightly downhill run, my heartrate was around 210-220, mas o menos.

Does that just mean that I'm out of shape, (which I know that I am)? Why would my heartrate on a climb be significantly less than on the downslope run? Am I "pushing it" too much? (I'll turn 60 later this summer, and am currently about 20 lbs. heavier than my ideal weight.)

After school lets out in the next few weeks, I'll have the opportunity to ride a lot more in the evenings. Hopefully, I can get my heart to pump a little slower when I'm on the bike. Thanks for any help or insight you can provide.

Hey Volo.
No, it means that the wind causing the insulative fabric of your (presumably dry?) jersey flop and tribocharge a bunch of static electricity, which screws with your heart rate readings. Later in the ride after your jersey has enough sweat, it becomes less insulative and won't do this. Sometimes it helps if you zip your jersey up all the way to prevent the flapping.

My Saturday Ride: PCH-San Luis Rey Trail-76-West Lilac-Circle R-Twin Oaks Parkway. (God I love living and riding here!) I was really looking forward to hauling the freight up Twin Oaks Grade near CSUSM, but was running late for pizza night with my neighbor.

I think you might be right. I examined two other logs of this same ride. One time, my HR was in the 130-160 range, depending on the terrain. Other log show a very similar plot to the one in question. Thanks for the feedback. It's good to know that one is "normal".

Haha--just noticed on your GarminConnect ride that you're up in Palmdale. Dry, desert air naturally increases the static discharge potential. This is going to be a common occurrence for you, but call Garmin; they have terrific customer service and I seem to recall someone mentioning that they have a fix for this.

2011 SoCal/Nevada Cycling Association State Time Trial Championships

ITT on Saturday, May 28th
TTT on Saturday, June 11th

Lake Los Angeles (east of Lancaster/Palmdale in the Antelope Valley)
Registration closes one week from today. Info at Southern California / Nevada Time Trial Championships web site.

SCNCA ITT and TTT route map.

I think I'll ride it this Saturday, about the same time of day as my group would ride ... just to see if maybe I'm good enough to give it a go without embarrassing myself. If I don't ride, I'm pretty sure I'll go to watch.

Went on a new loop ride today. Started from Marie Kerr Park, so that out-of-towners can have a good place to park and start/finish. Loop too way longer than I expected. But, the wind changed from calm to blustery about half of the way in. Post-ride analysis shows that the one hill on the route, Johnson Road is classified as a Cat 2 climb. For some reason, I thought it was a Cat 3. Don't feel so band now.

Nice windy ride. On the way back, the wind turned around on e. Nice! I'm just learning to embrace it and see it as a training opportunity.
In the Marines we used to say "If it ain't raining, it ain't training. I now just replace the raining with windy!

Sunday ride from North Fontana to Bonelli Park. I don't know my way around Bonelli and was looking for the loop around the lake. I've seen some cool photos, but I gave up and took off towards Azusa hung a right on Sierra Madre, to Foothill, to Baseline, left on Miliken and back home via Banyan. The last little climb over the 15 kicked my butt. Lots of riders out

For Bonelli Loop - When you get to the top of the hill before the 57 freeway you make a right onto raging waters dr (first stop sign after the guard shack) and then you cut across the dam and you'll come out by raging waters entrance then swing a right onto puddingstone. You can also do an alternate loop and go north on san dimas ave then right onto puddingstone drive. If your ever in the area on tue/thu evening or early sat morning, hit me up!

I've been wanting to do this ride: https://connect.garmin.com/activity/90868916 for a while now. The ride up VC Rd. is a bit spooky due to high speed traffic and a bit of a climbing grind, BUT the ride down LW Rd. is....THRILLING to say the least. At the turnoff back onto EV Pkwy. at the end of the hill I smelled something kinda rubbery and stinky.....it was my brakes! Slowing my fat ass down really put them through their paces.....woohoo!!!

Rode 15 miles up Lytle creek. What a deceiving climb. It doesn't look nearly as tough as it is. Kind of hard to see the grade, but I felt it.
