unsettling space between crankset and bb

hi all - i know this conversation has come up already but i couldnt quite find the help i was looking for.

im currently doing a crankset/bb overhaul on my 80s univega and was hoping to get the new bb and crankset installed tonight, but have run into a weird issue.

i thought i was using the right specs, a sugino rd2 crankset with a 68-103 bb, both JIS square tapered but when i tighten both crank arms on the spindles there is a pretty decent space. it seems like both crank arms are supposed to go in closer to the bb. ive tightened the crank bolts pretty decently too and they aren't closing in on the bb.

attached are some pictures. thanks for bearing with me and i hope you all can help me out - im trying to teach myself all this and do the conversion on my own.

you need to use a torque wrench and make sure it is tightened to spec.

That's pretty much what my RDs look like.

edit: Well...maybe not quite that much of a gap. Like vw said, use a torque wrench if you are unsure.

so hand tightening the crank bolts with an allen wrench is not going to cut it? it doesnt seem like the fittings for the square tapers on the crank arms arent going to give that much.

yea it guess its confusing for me cause i dont have a reference to go by. i didnt imagine there being that big of a gap between the inner sides of the crank arms and the bb inner workings

I had my RD2s professionally installed with my bb and that's how mine looks, it rides fine.

I guess I was freaking out over nothing? I'm gonna keep on installing and bring it into a shop to have it checked out afterwords - thanks all

I would not be too concerned. If the cranks feel tight, you should be fine. I have never used a torque wrench to install anything, and I have yet to experience major problems.
