Appears to be a later model called the MR200. There was a small thread about one last year.

First time I've seen Sekine in that font, as far as I can recall. What's up with that?

Hey, I just picked up a mixte Sekine today and was wondering if someone could help me date it.
The serial number is 0848 Bz
The crank arm says 77 on it.
Shimano Tourney Brakes
Shimano 500 front & rear derailleurs
Suntour Power Shifters
Shimano Hubs

It's definitely a late 1970s Sekine RL30. The crankset is OEM, so if there's a 77 code, it's likely 1977 or 1978. The Shmano derailleurs and brakes are OEM too, so if you want to increase your confidence in the year, there will be a two letter date code on the back of each part, which can be decypherd using the data on the components page of the Vintage-Trek website. Please post what you find,.

Needless to say, the Step Through has been painted, while the man's bike is still original, except for the saddle.
Please take this all with a grain of salt. It has been my experience, with many brands, that specifications, particularly component specs, change during a model year, simply because the intended components might not have been available, at the time of manufacture.

Both of the bicycles you pictured are from the mid to late seventies, and both were made in Canada in Three Rivers, Manitoba. The Step Through is a Sekine SIA 853, a girl's five speed with 26" wheels, while the man's bike is an SIU 270, the entry level man's Ten Speed.
Needless to say, the Step Through has been painted, while the man's bike is still original, except for the saddle.

Randy, by virtue of the crankset, I believe the female model may actually be a late 1970s TL35F. As for the SIU, I know this is what your catalog states, but I when I was selling them, they always came into the store with model SHA designations on the invoices and cartons.

My friend gave me a couple of old road bikes her family were getting rid of and also asked if I could fix up this Sekine of theirs. Which is quite similar to the one I just picked up last week, in that they are both mixte.
The serial number is P2161878
It has cottered cranks
This is after cleaning it up a little bit.
What else could I tell you to help decipher the model/year of this machine?

+1, it appears to be a late 1970s RL-30. The versions from the early part of this period used cottered cranks and Shimano 500 deralleurs while later versions used Selecta cranksets and Altus derailleurs. The combination of cottered crankset and Altus derailleurs, assuming they are original, would suggest an interim version, circa 1978-1979. It would be appreciated if the OP would check the two letter date code on the back of the rear derailleur.

I did a bit of research, on a Sekine, that I picked up a while ago. The catalogs suggest that the bike I am showing is a TL35F. Note the full Sekine accessory package, and upright handlebars.
Anyway, though I have had lots of Sekine bicycles pass through The Old Shed, I still have lots to learn about the little differences differentiating models.

40mm Tires on Sekine SHT?
Anyone have any experience mounting wider tires on a Sekine SHT frame? I have Dia-Compe centre-pulls installed, which I believe should be wide enough. How much clearance should I have between the tire sidewall and the fork?
I'm considering ordering a set of studded Nokian W 240 700C tires (I have swapped for 700c rims), but the tire is 40mm and I'm not sure it will fit.
Thanks

My brother rescued this one from a guys back yard last fall. It was under a tarp with a few old Raleigh's.
It was beat up when we got it so we replaced the seat, put a wheel set on it and put some new tape on the bars along with a lot of other work, but it rides great and I love the look of it

Don't know much about Sekine's but I really like the bike.

Your bicycle looks to be a late sixties or early seventies Japan made Sekine GS. I have owned a couple of these old bicycles and one still hangs in The Old Shed.
This is the first GS, as found...
And, this is how the fellow, who bought it from me, built it up...

Sekine SHC?
Hi, Instead of posting a new thread I thought I would add to this one.
I have a Sekine that I just saved out of the dump. I’m looking for info on it. What is orginal and what is not. What year it is.
Here are the specs:
Pink/Magenta 23” lugged steel frame with rear eyelets for fender and rack. S/N “W 92853”
Ornate Diamond Hearbadge with “gem” imbedded in the top and GS engraved in the centre.
SR stem. I could not find any date codes below the insertion mark.
Sake Custom Road champion drop bars
Dura-Ace Centre pull brakes and Levers with quick release cable hangers and “safety” levers.
Large Flange aluminum alloy Simano 333 hubs with “R O” stamped on one hub and “R U” on the other.
Shimano Lark STO rear and Thunderbird GTO front Derailer. (I can’t find model or date code numbers)
Chrome spoke protector with SEKINE carved in.
Shimano “finger tip” downtube shifters
Cotterless SR cranks.
Shimano Wingnuts holding the wheels on.
Chromed Fork and stay ends.
Rims are ARAYA 27x1 ¼ w/o HP (Chrome Steel)
Shimano 333 freewheel (5 speed)
Bike weight as I found it is 13.6 kgs (29.9 lbs)
Pictures as rescued are comming!

I have this bike with these exact components, allthough mine is british racing green and in as new condition. Did you ever get any more infor on it? I know mine dates to the early 70's and was made in Japan, but I am unsure as to model (I see below that it's probably SHC). I too was puzzeled by the dura-ace brakes. Thanks!

Early Seventies Pink Sekine
Hi Randy I visit you site on occasion and was there as recently as last week. It's a great resource.
IMHO my bike seems to be most closely related to you past 1971-73 GS. The differences I see are my simano alloy hubs vs the GS's alloy sunshine hubs and the GS's suntour V components vs my simano components. Even the made in Japan sticker is in the same location.
I'm slowly restoring/Cleaning it. Bottom bracket cups are really nice but thet need to be replaced because they have grooves worn into them. That is my biggest challenge so far is to find cups that are the same width. So far they have been too thin or to thick. I've tried various spindles too but nother fits it just right. Of couse I'm trying bb from other old junk bikes.
Here is a picture. Notice that it does not have intergrated derailer hangers. I guess that makes it more low end.
P.S.
Humbly may I suggest dialling down the brightness of the backgrounds to a faded watermark level to increase readability.

Sekine SHC?
Hi Paulzinho and Randy,
I've come across your site before in my Sekine searches Randy and I agree with Paulzinho that it's a great resource. I have a few questions. Was the SHC produced only in Canada (my bike is stickered "made in Japan"). I have yet to find a sekine with the same mix of components as mine (the exact same as those listed by Paulzinho) and the mix of high end (dura-ace brakes) and low end (lark and thunderbird deraileurs) is really puzzeling. I know my bike dates from the early 70's and is completely original. Maybe it will have to remain a little bit of a mystery?
The serial number is w 92565. I've included a few pictures below in case anyone is curious. Thanks again!

Bicycle Repair Man !!!
We have the most interesting Sekine down at the co-op... it is an 86-87 "Toledo" road bike and what is interesting besides the fact it is nearly mint is that it is a lugged frame with a sloping top tube and has a 42cm seat tube and a 55cm top tube.

I have not run across a pre-Canadian low end Sekine, where I live, so I am a poor person to ask about the one serres has presented. Best guess would be a bike with some upgraded components.

Hi Randy,
Although possible, I don't think Serres' bike has upgrades because it has the identical configuration as mine and my serial number 92853 which is very close to his. I know your focus is the Canadian made Sekine's. It may have to reamain a mystery for now.

Thought I'd add mine to the list. I haven't seen yet how to date these, so I'm not sure on the exact year. Anyway, thanks to randyjawa for some info when I was considering buying this bike, and a BIG thanks to junkfoodjunkie for not only picking it up for me, but then holding on to it for almost two months before we met in Dallas on his way to NAHBS.
Anyway, it seems to be an SHT without the original components. It's still a work in progress, but the plan is to convert it to a 650b single speed/fixed gear with fenders. Here it is as received:
