9Spd 105 with 7spd cassette/chain

9Spd 105 with 7spd cassette/chain
Have a 5501GSS 105 derailleur.
Appears to be a mid range (bwtween the short cage racing and the long cage mtn)
Researching it I discovered it'll handle a 30t cog.
I'm thinking of changing it out with the OEM rx100 so I can run both the current 12-28 and a 13-30 for the second wheel I'm building. The rx100 won't go above the 28t max.
(running a 46/34 compact up front)
I ran a length of the old chain thru the GSS and everything seemed smooth.
Just wondering if -before I dive into this-there are going to be any problems I should be aware of.
Running the sis thru the downtube shifters.
I don't see an issue whth setting up the 7spd index on the GSS .(figure it's a metter of setting the stops..yes?)

You will have to try it on your bike to see if it likes the 30t. Aside from that, the 9 speed rd should work fine with the 7 speed cassette and shifters. I have that setup myself, but found it was a little quieter with a 9 speed chain.

I saw the RD-5501-GS setup on a 30t but didn't get all the info.
Fella running it said he went to 10t pullys and hadn't had a problem.(Obviously,it's going to need trial and error tweaking.
He also was running old school (8spd) SIS
Several folks have said shimano went ultra conservative with the cog limit on their derailleurs (probably to avoid damaged equipment and lawsuits)
I went over to Harris Cyclery to see if I could find some info on setting the GS up for the 30t cog but coudn't find any.
If all else fails I'll have one of the two really good LBS give it a go.

Doing a blast from the past, I contacted a guy I knew from back in the day..Jim Langley.
Jim offered some pointers and tricks
(if the bike has horizontal dropouts,moving the wheel back a tad will give more clearence between cog and pulley wheel, Screw B tension screw all the way in -guess you can actually buy longer B tension screws to back the derailleur up even more, excess chain -I just installed a Sram 807-remove a link or two )
Anyway; Yes, Shimano IS WAYYY conservative with the ratings for their mid cage derailleurs.
With about 30 min of tweaking the 5501 climbed right up on the 30t and probably would have done so on a 32.
Ran the setup thru all 3 (11-26 12-28 13-30) wheels I now have for the bike and the 105 shifted beautifully every time.
