Restoring 1988 Trek 1000
I just bought a 1988 Trek 1000 at a yardsale this weekend, pretty cheap so I'm willing to put some money into it. This is the first bike I've fixed up, my last I bought new. I'm curious that if I fix it up and change out some of the original parts will it loose value? Does anyone have any idea how much a Trek 1000 from 1988 is worth?

Glued frame aluminum treks aren't all that valuable. If all the parts are still functional, I'd just clean it up and ride. I've also recently bought one in ok condition from around 1990. I'd be interested in photos and what you think of the ride quality. Mine is not currently in ridable condition.

Take some pictures and post in the Classic and Vintage appraisals forum.
In very good shape, ready to ride and a common size it is worth probably $150 - $250 depending on your market. I sold this one last spring for $275 but it was in near brand new, never ridden condition.

I bought mine off of craigslist for $75. The previous owner said that he had over 50 emails related to the bike. I put an additional $75 into it, and it is a very nice bike. I've been following ebay auctions related to 1000s and the winning bid varies from $150 to $250 (from the photos, it appears that the bikes are in an unrestored state).

As others have said it is not especially rare or valuable so modify as you see fit to enjoy it. I would clean, lube and ride as is, unless a part is nonf unctional.

Trek's first aluminum bike was the 1000. Their first triple crankset alloy frame was the 1100.

Had this Trek 1000 a few years back. Nice enough bike but I did not have it long enough to reach any ride quality conclusions.
