Bikes: Had a Surly Cross Check - was totaled in recent accident. Sadly now just a Fuji Crosstown as a backup bike.

Lets just say it is gone. I know where it is, but - its gone.
It was on the front wheel- I still have one spring. I reclamped the wheel, seems to work the same. Is it safe to ride?
TIA.

Doesn't affect clamping or safety. The only reason it exists is to center the skewer when loose to ease removal/installation of the wheel. If it annoys you enough then get a replacement but the wheel is fine without them.

The conical springs have nothing to do with the holding function of the quick release. They center the skewer so it's easier to slip the wheel back on. Without the springs the skewer will flop back and forth and make a pest of itself as the ends bump your dropouts until the wheel is in.
QR conical springs are cheap, and you can possibly get one free if you ask the local ship while making another purchase, otherwise expect to pay a dollar or so.
Warning - Blatant promotion warning coming, feel free to disregard. Buy Chain-L at my site (either trial or 4oz.) and remind me & I'll throw in a pair of springs for free.
