do you trust walmart stuff? I would never ever buy a bike from there, but I bought my bike light from there, and it's pretty good.

I just bought a bike chain from walmart. It didn't specify anything other than it's for 10 speeds and above. Doesn't even specify what it's made of. Cost $10.

Is this chain like most chains that I would buy from bike stores?

The Walmart chains are branded Bell, but they're actually made by KMC. They're probably comparable to the cheapest chains you'll find at a bike shop. Cheap chains usually work okay, but they rust quickly because there is no corrosion resistant plating.

I've never had a KMC chain rust... just take care of it and it'll be fine.

$15 at a bike shop and you could get a rust proof one. Otherwise, I'm sure it's fine. Rust-proof is over-rated unless you don't keep it oiled properly.

Only stainless steel chains are rust proof.

Can you use cooking oil to lube a chain? if not then why not?

An ex-girlfriend of mine once bought a bunch of parts from Walmart, all Bell branded.

- The aluminum kickstand was very light and durable.

- The light wasn't very bright, but it shines enough to make you more visible to cars, just not enough to make the road more visible to you.

- The cycle computer was complete crap, resetting it itself constantly.

- The saddle and gel cover were also crap.

Also, someone gave me a wireless cycle computer from Walmart (again, Bell branded), and it works perfectly. Overall, I think Bell's stuff is hit or miss. But for the prices, you can afford to experiment.

Nickel plated too. They're a lot cheaper.

Because food oils will turn rancid then gum up, attracting all sorts of debris and will lube your chain only for a short time. If you have to use something other than chain lube use a motor oil or some type of lube oil. Do not use cooking oil. Oil is cheap.
