Go from 8 to 9 cassette
This is something I'm considering for the future. Not this year or next.
My bike has an 11-30 8-speed cassette with Shimano Acera stuff.
What, if anything, will I need to replace (besides the cassette and chain) if I want to go to an 11-34 9-speed instead?

You will have to change at the very least- chain, shifters,and cassette. While I have had luck using some 8 speed derailleurs when swapping over to 9 speed, also changing the rear derailleur would insure a smoother system. The front derailleur can work with either if it is cold set properly.

The cassette width should be the same, right, so how could it affect the FD? Unless it's the narrower chain?
So, cassette, chain and shifters. Pretty much what I had hoped.
The question is if I think it's worth paying all that money to get just one extra lower gear...

The difference between 9 and 8spd isn't really anything to write home about. You can get yourself a nice 9spd derailleur and run it as an 8spd until you have money for the upgrade. Last I checked the XTR derailleurs even are still 8spd compatible.

Hehe, that seems rather backwards to me.
If I have to replace the derailer, I'll do that at the same time.
Anything else would be a waste of money...

I just converted my road bike from 8spd Sora to 9spd Tiagra.
New shifter and cogset were needed.
I tried Shimano Sora, 600, and RSX Derailers and found that they all work well with the 9spd set-up.
