Hey, all:
This is tangentially race-related in that it happened during a stage race. To cut a long story short, I lost a single Zipp aero skewer (SS version) recently--I believe in the exhausted state after a stage of the Cascade Classic, I inadvertently left a front skewer on my bumper and didn't realize it until it was too late. They're only sold in pairs, and I have no need for a rear one.

Does anyone have a spare front skewer (interested in this exact skewer) kicking around?

Alternately, if I buy a new set, does anyone have interest in the rear skewer?

The thing that gets me is that the rear will just languish in my toolbox for quite some time (maybe forever), and it's just wasteful.

You know you can use just any skewer right? Aero skewer? Seriously?

yes, of course i know this (but it is bikeforums, so it's worthwhile asking). i was using the "zipp aero skewer (SS)" based on zipp's product name, just to identify the exact one i was interested in. the "aero" part is uninteresting to me other than it is a moniker. hell, i don't have a cervelo! ;-)

i can certainly use any other skewer, or swap skewers between wheels, but it's for a zipp wheelset, and i admit the only reason to want one is to have the front and rear skewers to be of the same type. OCD? perhaps.

so....are you holding?

Maybe you could modify your fork or build some special spacers and use this one...

Zipp skewers don't seem to hold for me. Took me like a season to figure this out and a lot of botched races.

i've noticed they require some attention to tension -- moreso than other skewers. This is only true for me on one bike and in one location.

So.....assuming you've moved on, got one you might not be using any longer?

(How did this spoil a race for you, out of curiosity?)

I think maybe I'll spend $2,000 to have a custom, wider fork built, get a new front hub (one-off, of course), build a new wheel around it........sounds like a good plan.

No single fronts on ebay in recent times, and the single rear I saw didn't sell. Figured I'd just check in with a community that is more likely to have a higher percentage of people with Zipp wheels than the average population.

rear skewer + bolt cutter + thread die = front skewer.

Not saying that it's necessarily worth the time, but if you happen to have access to a metal tool shop...

my wheel moved in the drop outs a bunch of times and dragged against the brakes or frame, real annoying. it happened at green mountain stage race and Whiteface . I thought it was not tight enough, or a frame issue.. IT just would not hold no matter what. This is the black ones thought maybe the SS work better or differently.

well....i don't have access to the metal tool shop, and i don't have a rear skewer, so that's 2 strikes for me. point taken, though!

i experienced this. i think the zipps are particularly intolerant of dropouts that are not absolutely perfect in alignment. other skewers seem to clamp down tighter, but the zipps (by design, i think?) are a hair looser than normal, unless you really crank them. i know zipp are very sensitive to preload on their bearings, and i suspect they design their skewers to work in concert with that. in other words, if you really want to crank down on them, they make you work for it.

in my case, i had them just a hair loose, and if you hit a bump it could knock it slightly out of alignment. when i faced the dropouts, i noticed one was ever so slightly off. problem solved.

not saying this is true for you, but it is something to consider.

Update: Thanks to rruff, I've got a front skewer on the way. I was able to turn that part languishing in his parts bin into cash for me, and I didn't have to buy 2 skewers and wind up with another languishing in my own parts bin.
