There's an absolutely wicked looking Pugsley at my LBS - it looks like someone just rode it 1,000 miles cross country. The Moonlander looks even more radical .....

Heh funny. At the LBS today I ran into someone who had a Pugsley with them. I was in awe and he let me try it out... it was awesome. So we got to talking and he bought it last month, and is now mad because they announced the Moonlander with 4.7" wheels, and wants that instead. I made a mental note to come home and look it up online, but I forgot until this thread!

What else could they call this thing? Lol I can just imagine the meeting at Surly to come up with the perfect name for this bike. The first guy raises his hand and says, "Moonlander". They all get up, "Meeting ajourned. Thank you for you time".

You sir, are radical indeed. So many questions though and it will be interesting hearing your solutions. The fold will certainly be sacrificed, but I'm assuming that is not a priority. But things like chain line and shifting, or will you make this a single speed?

Thanks, but I can't take the credit. Check out the Sand Rover build (https://www.ratrodbikes.com/forum/vie...p?f=21&t=41955 ) and you can see where I stole the idea. But his build is with a BMX style frame. This will be single speed. It will still fold, but it won't be as neat or as symetrical since it has a longer rear end like a home made longtail.

A question about the Moonlander:

In the pic, there are these symmetrical blisters between the spokes. Looks like they're using a cutout rim to save weight and the inner tube is blistering out like that. Is that really what I'm seeing, and is that the suggested way to assemble it? I know that the tires run super low pressures, but that can't be good for it. Sure, Velox doesn't make an 80mm cotton rim strip, but I'd think that maybe a strip of something like tyvek wrap or nylon tarp taped into place might be used.

Typically people use packing tape, reflective tape, or ribbon from a fabric store for a rim strip. I'm thinking Surly or the photographer wanted to emphasize the fact that it has drilled rims or just did it to be weird.

I'd definitely use a rim strip on that. Those edges can't be good for your tube. Besides, you could enhance your color scheme that way - OK, sure, they're going with 'black black black' for the demo shots, but black and any vibrant color would be cool - pink, yellow, bright green, etc... Having those colors peek out of your rim would be sweet.

Course.... you'd need something both water and stain-resistant. Maybe colorful duct tape with the shiny side toward the rim, covered by another layer sticky-side down so you don't end up taping the tube in place.

Freaking sweet color for the Pacer. Now I (almost) wish I'd waited to buy a frame until that came out. Hate the green it's in now.

The specs are up for the 64cm. LHT . It looks like Surly has pulled a DOH! The 64cm. frame size uses the very same 390mm fork length as every other LHT. WTF? This means tall riders won't be able to raise the bars any higher than all the other sizes. Hopefully it's an error on their website, because this makes no sense.
