Underwear for riding

I have seen several threads discussing what outer layers to wear while riding but I havent found much info on what to wear closest to the skin. I commute to work so i wear my work jeans but have been having trouble finding something comfortable to wear under them. I have tried regular cotton boxer briefs which bunch up and get scratchy when sweated in, plus they hold moisture. I have had some success with under armour compression shorts but they are a bit pricey and i dont know how well they will hold up under constant abuse from the saddle. sorry for the repost if there is already a thread on this.

I was curious about this as well. I didn't wear any when I was mountain biking with the spandex shorts but I have a pair of Chrome Knickers that I wear now and they have a little padding. Not sure if people wear these without anything underneath. I tried a pair of Under Armour mesh boxer briefs but the seams chaffed badly.

I'll sometimes use these for long rides.

Edit: these were $14 when I bought them not $24 lol, good ol Nashbar..

Those Nashbar liners are good but have a bit too much padding for me. I found the Pearl Izumi liners to be a little more crotch friendly on long rides.

I've got a few pairs of Champion Double Dry compression shorts that are awesome for commuting or just tooling around. Plus they make my ass look ****ing amazing.

the best thing under pants would just be some stretchy shorts.

It really depends on what they're made of though. Cotton is usually a no-go for this guy. I like stuff that wicks moisture and would rather not be worried about chafing.

definitely non cotton is ideal.

i just use my regular underjawns for any intracity trip and never have issues.

problems might be due to too forward a saddle.

These are the best underwear overall, they work pretty well for riding too.

good threat. boxer briefs start becoming brutal around 15+ miles. those champion ones scrod posted look good. I tried out the nashbar shorts that were on sale earlier in the year and it feels like I **** my pants, not something I want to put on for anything other than an extremely long ride.

Depends on the length of commute and whatnot. For a long ride in I'll often wear bike shorts or liners on the way in, take them off in the bathroom and just freeball it while working, then put on another clean pair of bike shorts for the trip back out.

My favorite ever have been some speedos without liner. I actually had Arena, but pretty much the same style as these...

https://www.wiggle.co.uk/speedo-aquas...lack/Blue#more

My commute these days is just 4 miles so I just roll FOTL tighty whities or nothing at all. Just starting a second job on Tuesday about 15 miles away so gonna have to start thinking seriously about undergarments again.

I managed to get 3 pairs of McDavid Compression Shorts with 9" legs for $33 shipped off amazon. It seems they no longer have that deal though. They work great for going all around town, plus I can just take my shorts off and feel comfortable swimming in them after a hot ride. I went for a 70mile ride last weekend, and did wish i had something padded though. I ended up with some painful chaffing for about a day after.

There's also merino wool. I've worn leggings and they were very comfy. They are going to be more expensive than synthetics though. They were also warm, but I guess cycling shorts would be less warm.

Also, it feels weird saying that I've worn leggings.

Go to Target, they have 'cool&dry' compression shorts for $15. And the inside of the thighs/crotch is double layer mesh, so that vents that out extremely well. I wear them to ride, run, play soccer, march (band), throw em on under the board shorts before heading to the pool/beach. And for that cheap, you can't really go wrong.

I never wear underwear unless I'm wearing a suit, but I don't wear padded shorts either. Maybe you should be looking at the saddle instead.....

urban/recreational/commute rider, so boxers or commando works for me.

in my younger days i'd go w/ spandex under gym shorts for riding to the next town and back.

Sounds like the OPs main concern is moisture management, not discomfort in the saddle.

I wear some tight boxer briefs (cotton and some nylon) from Hugo Boss ($20 for a pack of three) when I go on long rides. Tight enough and dissipates heat fast enough. Not scratchy at all.

Your work jeans will get worn out first before your underwear will. My "fashion" jeans (aka thin denim) got worn out in 6 months of regular riding, so your work jeans should last considerably longer.

I have a pair of Joe Boxer microfiber like boxers that I wore on a metric century w/o issue (beyond really hating my saddle when I was done)

a shame our Kmart closed, I'd get more of them.
