2012 -- Goals
Got any long distance cycling goals for 2012?
Maybe something in the Randonneuring world? A 24-hour race? The Century-A-Month? The RAAM?

How did you do in 2012? Did you reach your goals?

We considered a 200K per month challenge for this year, but we think it would be tough to find a 200K in each month this particular year. So we'll stick to another attempt at the Century-A-Month. That went well in 2011 ... we successfully completed it, and it worked very well as motivation to keep riding long distances all year long.
We are talking about finishing the Super Randonneur Series. We've got a 200K and 300K so far in the 2011/2012 Randonneuring year ... now we need the 400K and 600K.
And maybe a fleche ... and maybe something longer.
I would love to do another 24-hour race, but finding one that fits our schedules for this year would be the bigger challenge.

Still working out options for 2012 but so far:
1000 in Oz
200 and 600 UAF Audax in France
Paris-Low Countries-London 1100 UAF to celebrate the Olympics
The Young Lady is looking at the Cascade 1200 but lack of holidays may preclude that one for me
A nice selection of AUK events for a couple SRs and a 'Randonneur Round The Year', including an Arrow or two
Hopefully a couple of Fleche du France and possibly a Diagonale
Supporting a friend on the Mersey Roads 24 TT.

Hoping to complete the four block ride around my neighborhood without a break? If I succeed and I'm not too exhausted, a couple of centuries and maybe a double metric or two.

Start a series of brevets this year for the first time (200K/300K, maybe more if fitness holds up).
Get my 5 year old twins out for a tour on Le P'tit Train du Nord in Quebec on our Periscopes (not long distance for me but it is for the girls)
Maybe a point to point from CT to Buffalo or NYC to DC over 3 days toward the end of the season.

I expect to order a new bike in a couple of days, and one goal is to get 10,000 RUSA kilometers on that bike for the year.
Come to think of it, that's about my only goal. As a part of doing that, I'll be riding a Super Randonneur series, and possibly 1,000k or 1,200k, but that has yet to be planned out.
I expect to ride in the Texas Time Trials again, but haven't decided what distance to go for.

1100 km Paris-London Olympic brevet is our main goal for 2012.
We are talking about a 1200 km about sept-okt in Australia.
SR serie in Denmark and countries around
All of it on road tandem.

Still aiming for the 100 mile ride once a week for 52 consecutive weeks. With the 105-107 miles...by the time I get home from getting internet access right now, this will make for week 24 in a row. Yep, I already have my first century of the year under my belt.
Also hoping not to break my 10,000 miles between Memorial Day and the end of the year this year but something gives me a bad feeling that might be hard to have not happen. The ride today sure didn't seem very long. I'm in WAY to good of shape. Summer is going to interesting. I'm going to have to find something else to do this summer or I may end up the year with 20-30,000 miles on a stinking bicycle in one year. Pray for me I need to come to some level of sanity.

Hope to complete one or two randonees this year, and maybe a couple of imperial centuries.

Complete a SR series, a 1200k, and a 24-hour - the latter probably Michigan.

Start Randonneauing (already joined RUSA and DCRand).
Do at least 3 centuries, and in all cases, push for better than 19 mph ave rolling speed.
Complete a double-century.
Successfully complete at least two 200 kms.
Successfully complete at least one 300 km.
Try a 400 km.
Do a 24-hour charity ride (already rigistered).
Build myself up to the point that I feel comfortable doing a super-Randonneur and a 1,200 km in 2013.

Main Goals:
-California Triple Crown Stage Race
-One century per week
-Centuries in 3 new states
Possible Goal:
-Ride across Nevada and see how close I can get to 24 hours. I'm still undecided on that. I'll have to see if there's a good spot in the calendar when the California Triple Crown dates are posted.

Become a randonneur. I've joined RUSA, but I know that you're not official until you've done your first 200 km.

Ride around Lake Livingston 102 miles
Ride around Lake Livingston Twice for a double century.
I would like to ride the double century in Helotes to Camp Wood TX 600 https://www.raceacrossoregon.com/hillcountry
I need to find a tent camping spot near by the start.
Learn how (and when) to read a cue sheet.
Maybe by November join RUSA and be equipped ( Physically, financially and bike set up)
DO the American Diabetes Association 100 mile ride in Houston TX

I want to do my first century (miles) in late June or early July. I have 6-day Sagged tour planned for mid-July, and to be able to do a Century before that would help me considerably with confidence. First time I tried a tour like this I had to quit it early (new employer came knocking on my cell phone!), but I was actually relieved I didn't have to finish it. I want to get into it with much better physical preparation.
Century a month is a possibility, but I need to work up to my first one, first. I've done a small bunch of metrics, and found them easier as I went along, but right now I'm in a base training level, not ready for a cold windy day.
I may try some Midwest brevets; Ohio, Illinois, and Wisconsin have some, but NONE in Michigan (grr!). If any Canucks could recommend some flat ones in flatter Ontario, it would give me some more targets to consider. Next year I'd like to try a harder tour like the Bonton Roulet (yes, I know it's bad French) in teh Finger Lakes area, which is a lot hiller than what we get in Michigan.

We also completed the Century-A-Month challenge in 2011 ... the first time I've successfully completed it since 2006. The CAM challenge was a great motivator to get us out there and riding long distances regularly again.
We've also been working on our climbing and took on a 7 Peak Alpine Ascent Challenge this summer. We have completed 5 of the 7, and plan to complete the remaining 2 before the summer is over. In addition to that, we've been climbing all sorts of other hills in the area, and I'm cycling up stuff I used to walk.
So 2011 was a good year for us, and hopefully we can build on that for 2012.

For the rest of the year ... definitely an SR series, possibly/probably a fleche, maybe a 1000 or 1200, depending on whether there is something conveniently located nearby and conveniently timed for August and not-too-hot looking. So that narrows it down to a 1000Km in either North Carolina or eastern PA or western PA, or a 1200 in North Carolina. I suspect that North Carolina can be pretty hot in August so maybe I'll be up in PA!

Complete the National 24-hour Challenge - well, what I really mean is ride a significant portion of the 24 hours
Ride RAAM Challenge Minnesota - probably the 200-mile event since I have too many other things on my calendar on adjacent weekends to want to ride 400.
Ride one of the Adirondack 540 events - haven't decided which distance but probably 2 or 3 laps (272 miles or 408 miles) depending on how previous ultra racing went.

The Eight-Legged One is doing:
--A full brevet series -- a 200K, 300K, 400K and 600K -- all on a fixed-gear bike. This will be my 8th full series, if I complete it. Mea cupla to the Gods of Randonneuring purity, but I'll be riding the 400K and 600K "for time." Never done that, and I want to collect some data for another project I have planned down the road.
--The Sebring 12/24 hour. I'm racing the 12 hour. Fixed, on a pursuit bike.
--The flèche. The flèche is one of the most fun bicycle rides I've ever done. This'll be my 4th one. I'm captaining a team starting from my home. Maybe on a geared bike. Maybe on a tandem. Depends on what the final team roster looks like. Goal is the minimum distance (360km) with as much screwing around (eating, drinking, resting) as is permitted under the rules.
--The Tour of the Scioto River Valley in Ohio, 2nd weekend in May. I'm leading a group of guys doing the whole thing -- Columbus-Portsmouth-Columbus -- in one day, entirely in daylight. (Fixed, of course.) This will be my 8th TOSRV.
--Sort of bike-related: One of my riding buddies and I are running the Columbus marathon, October 21. I guess I should buy a pair of running shoes.
--Perhaps climbing Haleakala. Mrs. The Octopus has a conference in Hawai'i in June and I may tag along with the kids and take a little side-trip. There's an 11,000-foot volcano on Maui that needs fixing....
