2012 Cycling Goals

What are you looking to accomplish on your bicycle in 2012?

I am going to do 4000+ miles on my bike this year.
I am going to complete an "Imperial" century in less than 8 hours (after I complete one at any pace).
I am going to ride out of Warm Springs, GA up to the parkway and ride across it to Pine Mountain, GA.

I would like to get 2000-3000 miles ridden this year (did 1020 in 2011) beyond that who knows!

I am a goal setter for sure and 2012 will be a great year for riding (at least I hope). Goals that are listed below I hope to achieve yet some will be a challenge. But what’s life without challenges? !? Below are my goals in no particular order… and yes these are cycling specific:

1- Total distance for 2012 will be 3000 miles I hope
2- Commute to work 40 times in 2012
3- I hope to get faster on the bike (not sure what that means but I will work on it)
4- Be able to ride hills better.
5- Ride with more people and meet more people.
6- Lead rides for beginners to pay back what was given to me…. Plus I love teaching!
7- Learn more of the mechanical ways of fixing bikes.
8- Get my wife to love riding. I love riding a lot and plan to ride a lot so I hope she will feel it too because I would like to spend time with her versus without her.
9- Ride a century.
10- Ride in Washington DC.
11- Lose weight. This has to be done. Its hard to push this on a bike right now. I am taking active steps already.
12- Find a new relationship with food.
13- Learn to build a wheel
14- Write articles for the bike club newsletters.
15- Ride more during the week.
16- Do some night rides
17- Increase my distance riding
18- Get studded tires and ride in the snow on my commuter bike.

I hope to inspire, in some way or another, others to get out and start riding. Cycling has changed my life. I have seen so many cool places, met great people, and I want to share that ability with others.

I'm planning on completing a couple of long rides during the year although not sure exactly what they'll be just yet. One will be a coast-to-coast across the UK all being well, which will test my legs on the hills in a way they've never been tested before.

I want to drop another couple of inches from my waistline, last October I bought myself the first pairs of jeans with waists beginning in 3 that I've had in more years than I care to admit, and want to go down another size or two. Dropping another 30 pounds would be nice too.

I'm keeping my recurring theme (achieved in 2011) to complete the equivalent of the Tour de France over the course of the year.

I'd like to complete another century (did my first ever 100-miler last year, two days after the second of two consecutive 100+ km riders). Not sure when/how to fit that in, short of just doing laps of a circuit for the sake of it.

I'd also like to ride in some new areas. Using the bike for more long-distance stuff seems like a good way to do it, visiting friends and family who live 50-80 miles away. I'll let my wife visit at the same time in the car, so I've got an easy option to get back home if I need it...

My goal for 2012 is to do an imperial Century (single day ride) a month. I already have organized rides lined up for March, April, May and looking for more rides to finish out the year.

I'd love to complete a Century in under 6 hours (ride time) but it will have to be a flat century. I did a 31 mile ride today at an almost sub-6 hour pace and there is no way the engine could have held out for another 69 miles. However, the engine is improving. Also, I plan to get a ~20lb bike. A lighter bike should help reach that goal versus my current ~40lb bike.

I want to work up to commuting 3 days a week every week by the Summer. I still need better lights and anxiously waiting on Daylight Savings Time to return.

I'm still trying to figure out my total mile goals and I'd love to say 6,000 miles but I know January and February may make that goal difficult to reach.

I want to relearn how to walk and ride. Sorry, but I can't do much planning beyond my recovery from bilateral knee replacement.

It is hard to set my goals high considering I have a stressful full-time job and a family to take care of, but these are my current goals for 2012:

Minimum of 1500 miles total
50 mile ride along the Jersey/Delaware coasts
At least two metric centuries
Save up enough money to get a new or used carbon bike
Get my weight down as close to 175 as possible

Easier in the sense that 62.1 miles is easier than 100 miles assuming the terrain is comparable.

Obviously 100 miles across Holland would be easier than 62 miles across the Smokies and back.

After a suck ass year of 3500 miles in 22011, I hope to get my mileage back up to 5, 6, 7000 miles. Lost about a month and a half in 2011 while sharing a ride and trying to work out work commute schedules with Gina .

This year is already on track with the new car. Now when I get out early, I can run home to do some serious rides and climbs.

THIS..............................

Means more of THIS..............................

I would like to hit 1,000 miles a month, with 10,000 km in RUSA events. And a Super Randonneur Series will work its way in there. And some form of Texas Time Trials event, to be determined.

1) Complete my P-12 with RUSA
2) Ride a 200k with the Seattle Randos again
3) Drop my final 20-ish pounds for racing season (or hit 12% bodyfat; whichever happens, happens.)
4) Place in the top 5 overall for both the Seattle Cyclocross and MFG Cyclocross race series as a singlespeeder against the regular Cat-4 Masters 35+

Still working on my 2012 goals. 2011 was a rough year as I had numerous challenges to overcome off the bike. I lost a great portion of the summer due to a few crappy circumstances. Still, I managed to accomplish a few of the things I set out to do. I would love to up the ante for 2012, but I feel like I'm already behind.

I think the key items I want to focus on are getting the rest of the way to my goal weight, trying out a RUSA event or two, being more competitive, and basically just getting out there as often as I can and being consistant with my training.

2012 goals:

* ride 3200km
* learn how to mountain bike
* I lost 30 lbs in 2011 and I don't want to find them. I also want to lose 75 more pounds in 2012
* swim regularly and take up running
* take more photos of my rides and hopefully video if I can buy a video camera
* encourage and foster another person into the wonderful world of Clydesdale/Athena cycling

Ride more than I did in 2011, including at least one century.

That's pretty much it.

* Ride 3000 miles
* Improve on the hills
* Complete a century
* Enjoy riding at the end of 2012 as much as I do at the beginning!
* Lose 60 more pounds along the way
