triple crankset/ 7 speed freewheel compatibility
I'm planning to replace my 6 speed freewheel with a 7 speed IRD 13-32 but keep my Sugino 50,45,28 triple crankset on my old touring bike. Can I expect a smooth transition or am I asking for trouble? Any advice would be appreciated.

I use 6 and 7 speed freewheels inter-changeably on the 126 axle bikes.
Ultra 6 started the compress more cogs into the limited space , of a 5 speed.
7 speed is the same scheme in the space of a standard width 6 speed..
your chainrings may be worn , but you can buy new ones too, new chain of course.

^^^Yes. It should be fine. Your only difficulty might be removing the old freewheel. Sometimes they get stuck on there pretty good. BTW, I used a 7-speed IRD 13-32 freewheel to replace a 5-speed freewheel on an older touring bike. A little pricey, but very nice, IMHO.

With the proper freewheel tool and a long spanner, removing the old freewheel shouldn't be too much hassle. As said before, the overall size of 6 and 7-speed freewheels are the same. Aside from the new freewheel, you'll need a 7-speed shifter (unless you use friction) and a chain. Anything labelled between 5-speed and 8-speed chain should work fine.

You didn't say what the cog range was on your 6. I'm assuming the max is not much different than the 32 you're replacing it with. If not, then you may have chain wrap issues. But I would guess on a touring bike, not a problem. But you might need to add a chain link or two.

Thanks for the information. My old 6 speed freewheel was a 13 - 28. I was thinking about sticking with friction, although I might consider indexed if it was simply a matter of indexed barcon shifters....I thought it would involve new derailleurs.
