Movie: The Bike Thief (1948)
I got up this morning and sat down to have a cup of coffee in front of the TV and was flipping channels and came across this movie, "The Bike Thief" in the channel listings.
The movie was just ending but I found the last scene pretty interesting.
This guy decided to steal this bike an just as he rode away with it, an old man yelled, (in French) "He's stealing my bike!" A lot of men started chasing this guy down the streets until they caught him! Then they ruffed him up and started to haul his butt down to the police station! I guess back then, bikes meant so much more to people!
Obviously, it was a movie, but I thought this was pretty funny considering that will probably NEVER happen these days! Ahhh the good ol days!
Any other bike-loving movies out there??

The man was able to get a job, after he and his wife basically hocked everything just to eat, only because he had a bicycle. Then his was stolen. He and his young son walked all over the city looking for it. At the end of the day, he finally resorted to stealing a bike himself out of pure desperation. It's a great movie, but very sad.

a classic and very sad movie. the bicycle was life, income, everything, without it, just a common desperate thief.

My favorite scenes are where he throws a ladder over his shoulder, picks up his sign materials, jumps on the bike, and rides off to put up another poster.

The scenery is beautiful in this movie. Caught it by accident a couple years ago. Not a particularly uplifting film, but an interesting time period, and you gotta love this the lead characters passion for finding his stolen bike! He needed that thing to work and commute!

Just finished watching this classic - Wow! what a great movie. They don't make them like that any more!

I have seen this a number of times, even though it is a real downer. I always cringe during the scene when his bike is stolen. Survival in post-war Europe was hand-to-mouth for many.

The Bicycle Thief is a great movie. If you're still on the fence, here's another urge to check it out.
in the same old black and white movie vein, but nothing to do with bikes, sorry, also check out The Wages of Fear (it's a french/italian film so maybe that's close enough
. four down-and-out men hired to drive two trucks loaded with nitroglycerine up mountain roads for a big US oil company in south america. doesn't sound too promising, but the intensity and suspense is executed wonderfully. films like these two are treasures.

65, which one, Le salaire de la peur, or The bicycle thief?
I think both are great. Have seen both and remember them quite well, even though its been maybe 25 years since Ive seen them (for me, sign of a great movie)

Ladri....interesting as now I see the word. Ladrone is thief in Spanish...
For me what I retain of that film is the humanist view of an anyman being forced into a theft due to desperation. That you or I could be that man.
I need to write this down on my list of "greats" to watch with my kids, now teenagers.
