OT: Gina Lost Her Father

Another sad battle with cancer. Tony ( father) had been in the hospital since November, before Thanksgiving. She visited him as much as possible during that time and was worried that he might pass when she was not present. So last couple of weeks she was there plenty. The day came when doctors said there is not much more to be done other than discontinue any treatment then let him go. It was all suffering and pain. Gina was there day and night. She slept an hour or two the last few days while being at his side. She was one of 3 people that were there when he took his last breath. Not that she was happy to lose her father but honored and privileged to say she was with him when he passed.

Never a good thing when one dies but we did get a chance to visit family from New Mexico, Missouri, and Oklahoma. Uncles and Aunts from NM that she hadn't seen since she was 7 years old. Wow, Gina is a sweet person and meeting her family was a great pleasure. I see where she gets her pleasant personality.

Hours of visits, little sleep, long hospital hours, he finally passed. Watching him decline quickly over the last few months, I must say he has to be in a better place now. Sad time sitting in the chapel with her father the night of the viewing. From the very first minute till being asked to leave. Back the very next morning at opening time hours before the others arrived, she got to spend every last possible minute with him.

Yesterday at graveside she was way to broken up to say anything when asked to share words. She's never been a public speaker and neither have I but I knew it would mean the world to her if I could say the things I'm sure she wished she could have said. Wow, knowing the things she has told me about her feelings, it is hard to keep from getting choked up while speaking. But it was an honor speaking on her part at such a moment.

It's something special when during one of your final conversations your wife's father says , "I'm glad you guys don't smoke and drink, it's good you've kept her healthy and keep riding those bikes!".

Gina thought for day what kind of a token she could place in his coffin as a memorial gesture. She ended up placing one of her century cycling medals.

Rest in peace Mr. Segovia

Aw, sorry for your loss, and Gina's. Her father was obviously blessed with a wonderful family and it's good that he was surrounded by them for his last days.
