Found this on CL and was thinking somewhere down the road to convert it to a single speed. This is also a bike i will be using to commute to work on so it must be pretty reliable. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Many bicycles are good, but there are, of course, different levels of good. Top of the line Shogun bicycles are highly sought after and prized collector's items. Entry level offerings are not nearly as much in demand.

For $100, however and depending on condition, the bicycle just might be worth picking up.

It is already set up in single speed though which is what i intend to do with the bike.

it is hard to tell. there is not enough detail of either bike to say which is better. the one in Inland Empire has been hacked into a Fixie POS so if that is what your looking for go for it.

I've had several Shoguns, some have been fairly entry level - a model 300, for instance, was pretty basic. I converted it to a three-speed, drop bar randonneuse-ish neighborhood rider. I also have a Shogun 2000 which is an entirely different story altogether: very nice touring bike with all the bells and whistles. As already stated above, a wide range of models and quality.

Go take the fixie for a spin and see how it fits and rides. For 100 bones , you really can't go wrong.

The sticker on the downtube indicates the frame is made with Tange #5 straight-gauge chromoly tubing. Could be worse, but it's not the lightest, either. That bike is a couple of steps up from the bottom, about lower mid-range.

Shoguns are the very best bikes, beating out Centurion by a long shot! Not a popular one but if you can get one, do it! I bought a 300 model in 1988 and have ridden it for 18000 miles and only trued the rear wheel once; original chain and everything else.I paid a 100.00 then and just within the last 2 years located another one exactly like it and it's performing equally well; paid $225.00 plus shipping! These bikes just last forever!

I think Shoguns fell between Fuji and Zebrakenko when it come to quality.
But quite a bit closer to Fuji than Zebrakenko.
Thing is, Japanese bikes in the 80's were very good quality in general (much better build quality than most Euro bikes, except, maybe at the highest model levels from Europe), so you can't go wrong with any of these brands. Junk from Japan was quite a rare thing, even with most of their basic bikes.

I like that the designers of the badge thought to match the curves of the lugwork both above and below. (or maybe happy coincidence? ) but either way the result is good.
