Bike was stolen while having coffee this morning

Bike was stolen while having coffee this morning
This morning, while on a group ride, we stopped at a downtown (Little Rock) bakery for coffee and a bite to eat. We were sitting outside, but around the corner from where I had my bike leaning against the building wall, along with two other bikes. The bikes were about 20 feet from where I was seated. When I walked over to my bike, it was gone.
The bike is a Cannondale Super Six. It is well equipped with Dura-Ace, SMP saddle, Mavic ES wheels, and on and on. Just gone. Also gone was my helmet, gloves, Garmin 500 and seat bag. One of my riding friends found one of my gloves in front of the apartments behind the bakery.
I called 911. The operator said I should call back on a non emergency number. I said I find this an emergency since the total value of the bike and equipment is about $7000.00 and I am 12 miles from my car with my transportation stolen. She agreed and did send an officer to record the theft.
I did not have a lock on the bike. Thought I was close enough to it. No insurance on the bike.

End of the semester in college towns is always a bad time for theft. Sorry it happened to you.

My insurance agent counseled me to lock my bike at work (closed plant, security guards, etc). I ignore him, but I do lock it elsewhere, or stay with it.
Our LBS relates the story of the fella that was sitting at coffee, with his bike leaned up against the window he was sitting at. Guy stole the bike and was gone, after smiling and waving, before the poor fella could get out of the shop.
Condolences. Sorry this happened - ouch!

Sorry to hear about your loss. That's one expensive cup of coffee!
Bike theft is common here in the suburbs of L.A., so if I can't keep it by my side I don't leave it.
Again I'm sorry some douchbag walked off with your ride.

I'm sorry to hear that.
Sometimes when I stop and take off my helmet I clip the strap through the rear wheel, and through an object if there's one handy. Sure it can be undone but it'll take a bit of time to figure out how. Also shift the derailleur but don't pedal, so its hung up mid shift. That'll make it harder for someone to ride off with it.

Ouch. My condolences. This reinforces my resolve to never leave my bike out of my site.
- When I can still see my bike, but I'm more than a few feet away, I'll leave the bike in it's lowest gears, and set the brifters to make the bike crunch into a higher gear if someone tries to ride off on it.
- I loosen the quick releases, on the theory that the wobbly wheels and sudden higher gearing will slow down a their. I'm old but I still run fast, and it's not a stretch to think I could catch a thief trying to maintain balance on a shaky bike.
- I think I'm going to start tightening the brakes down, too.
Of course, if someone pulls up in a van and throws my bike inside it, then I'm screwed. Which is why I am never far enough away from my bike to let that happen.

I sometimes ride bikes that didnt cost me more than 40 bucks,,but yet I lock my bike,,so i am not stranded somewhere with out a ride back. Bike thief's always know they can swipe your bike in seconds so they watch you walkin to a coffee shop and hop right on your bike,,or just throw it into a back of a pickup.

Having lost a bicycle (not by theft) I looked into bicycle insurance, but didn't find a reasonable alternative. The value of my loss was about half yours but I was really sad. I was lucky I could afford a better replacement. I hope this will not be an economic hardship for you. Even wealthy people will miss $7000.
If anybody has some thoughts about alternatives for insurance, please post your advice.

That is just wrong.
I need to check with my homeowner's and auto insurance to see if I can get a rider to protect the investment....granted no where near the value of your bike, but a significant investment for me.

Your bike should be covered by your homeowner's insurance. These policies tend to be uniform and cover all items usually stored at home. There will probably be a deductible ($500 or so, depending on your policy), and there may be a cap (although mine does not have a cap).

Ooooh! I feel so bad for you! I had my bike stolen right out of my own garage a few years ago and it really stung. Hopefully, Karma will come 'round to nail the thief!

I'm very saddened to hear this. Post up signs with a picture of the bike and a reward. Check on Craigslist. Let everybody in the bike clubs know.
Sorry for the painful lesson. As I recall, I remember you talking about buying it recently. Having had a bicycle stolen out from under me as I was riding it, I know that they are never safe. I'll pray for its safe return.

That happened to me and my wife in March during a trip to Hawaii, stolen from the garage at a VRBO. Two Bike Fridays. Found out later that the owners of the VRBO had their two best bikes stolen from the same garage 3 months earlier.

One of my colleagues at work just had his commuter bike (Specialized Tricross) stolen from the campus we work on. His homeowners insurance is going to cover it but for some people it may be difficult to come up with a good replacement cost estimate.
