running gear recommndations

i al lookin at upgrading my running gear, i hae shimano lx deore rear derailleur and cluster, deore front derailleur, chain, crank and bottom braket, now i have been looking at upgrading all this to lx deore, or above, seeind as xt's are very little more but the bloke in the bike shop said that i will end up breaking even an xtr system, and that it is easier to replace with the cheaper item, as the sysems don't get any styronger for the extra cash, now is this true and what can everybody recommend i do, cash is an issue, i don't want to be paying 900 dollars for a crank, an lx crank and bottom braket is 270, anyway can anybody help me out here?

If you break things a lot, look at the Saint line-up. It's meant for DH/freeriding, but for regular riding it'll hold up a lot better. Pretty expensive, but not near as much as XTR I think.
