Colorado Tour with Bikes
The wife and I are doing a Colorado tour, carrying our bikes with us for short rides in the towns and places we stay.
My singing group sang Sunday at DeBeque, CO, near Grand Junction, and then we went on to Gateway Canyon Resort – nothing for 50 miles on either side, with a sign as you leave Grand Junction – no gas for 100 miles.

Where we rode our bikes daily and I did a bit of mtn biking
Upon leaving, the canyon carved by the Dolores River is the most absolutely beautiful and spectacular canyon I have ever seen. Bright red cliffs hundreds of feet high for 30 miles.
We are in Durango for 3 days, where we rode the world famous Durango – Silverton narrow gauge
Today in Durango we rode the Animas River Trail, which goes through Durango

On to Salida and then home.

The MTB trails in that area are the stuff legends are made of.

Gateway Resort is owned by John Hendricks, owner of the Discovery channel. He has invested millions and millions. His automobile classic car collection there is valued at about $25 million. Groups such as Netflix management come there for conferences. Tremendous conference facilities, about 70 full-time employees. We were two of about 10 guests - we got a special 3 for 2 nights deal. It is NOT cheap!!!!
There is literally nothing for 100 miles on CO 141 - no stores, perhaps a few houses and one fire station and that is it.
He only has 5 homes. This conference center is sort of his "toy."

My maternal grandparents grew up in New Castle, where one of the downtown streets is named after my shopkeeper great-grandfather, John Ritter. For them, a trip to the city meant traveling to Grand Junction, where my grandmother held her first job as an RN. They always spoke fondly of their years in Colorado.

The Rock Cycle
The Canyon of the Dolores River, south of Gateway, is one of my favorite roads. I've ridden it several times on loaded tours.

Very nice. I rode on the DS out of Durango a few years ago and enjoyed it very much. The train dropped us off at Needleton to fish and picked us up a few hours later on its way back down to Durango. Brings back good memories... Thanks for sharing it.

Last year we spent the better part of a week in Glenwood Springs, with our tandem. Next time we come up we plan a few days in Grand Junction.
