Bike Bags - buy or make
Ok I been looking for a seat bag, but could not find the one I wanted.
So the other day I seen someone had thrown out an old black leather chair. So I cut the leather off and made a seat bag. Demission are 6.75" diameter x 6.5" wide. The Bag holds 138 cu inch of stuff. I put a strip on the seat rails to hold it to the seat. I also used an old read reflector mount to attach it to the seat post. The zipper I got out of an old suite case someone thrown out as well. It took maybe 2 hours total time to make the bag and cost nothing. That allways the best price for me.
Next I'll make a frame bag and maybe a rank trunk.
So I was thinking how many of you guys and girls make your own bags?

I wish I had the skills to make my own stuff...Unfortunately, my sewing skills end at replacing buttons on trousers and the most basic of sock repair.

Here is a photo of the bag.
Just to give you a little more info on the bags make up. I cut a 1 gallon plastic jug side out and placed it in the bag to help hold big items and hold the round shape. It also protects the bag form tools and stuff. I use a screw to connect the reflector mount to the bag with a small wood block in the bag. I also put a wood strip across the top that the seat strap is screwed to.

I just took it for a test ride. I do just feel the bag when I ride. I mean I just barely touch the bag when peddling. So I'm going to space it back about 1 inch with a wood block between the mount and the bag. That should do it. I put a spare tube, patch kit, wrench for back axle nut, air gage, set of Allen wrenches, phone, chain tool, 6" of chain in the bag and had like 3/2 + of the bag still free for stuff. So took all that out and rolled up 2 Tee- shirt and put them in the bag. Yep that felled it up like ¾ the way.

Made this from scratch, using a beach bag that I got as a travel agent from the Sheraton Maui. It was a nice bag, but as I'm no longer a travel agent, I don't have a whole heck of a need for beach bags (besides the four others that I got from other hotels). Based my design on a bag I had as a teenager back in the 80's.

the bag has 6.75 inches sides abd 6.5 inches across. I used a small plate to make the sides and then made it as wide as the seat.

Good stuff. I like the idea of using a milk jug to reinforce and protect the bag!
I buy too, but I'd love to make my own stuff. However, I lack the skills and - more importantly - the time for that. I did a fair share of DIY and enjoyed it, but I usually modify existing stuff or reuse parts of other products, not build stuff from scratch.

I have in the past, sewn from scratch, and repurposed Pre-existing bags, both..
But Welded in High frequency production tooling made for welding watertight seams,
is a bit tougher to shade -tree together for someone living in wee apartments..

I repurposed a $3 Thrift store shoulder bag as a carradice-style seat bag, but wouldn't have the skills to make one from scratch!

Come on guys it's not that hard. You just hold two pieces together and run a needle through them. Thats all I do.
No really I made the bag I wanted out of Paper. To make a pattern. Then I just lay the pieces on the leather and cut the piece out. When sewing them together, just sew the bag inside out. Then when your done sewing it together just turn it outside in LOL. How hard is that?
And doing it this way no one can see the crapy sewing job LOL.

when it comes to a seat bag, or handlebar bag, a roll type bag which compresses, obviously reduces if not eliminates any wiggle.
when a bag sways or wiggles, with enough weight in it, that motion can make a bike feel like its swaying around. Keeping weight secured, inline, center mass, and low center of gravity is key. Optimally focusing the weight down low at the bottom bracket is about as good as it can get.
