Hi, recovering from this flu is taking way too long. I rode Saturday and Sunday last weekend but maybe I shouldn't have. Not much energy or appetite all week. Sleeping OK but feel blah when I'm awake. I feel marginally better today so I will probably venture to the velodrome to see how I feel.

Glad that the rest of you have avoided this and are sticking to your training schedules despite the weather challenges.

I wimped out tonight. 32 degrees, 22 with the wind chill, and what the Weather Channel calls "wintry mix." I have to be on the road tomorrow by 0630 anyway. I get to drive in falling, but probably not sticking, snow.

I feel like we're ripping the space time continuum.

Add to that the NE has one of the most robust race calendars in the country, and the states that border the gulf and mexico tend to be 110 in the summer. Riding the rollers when it's zero out seems like a small price to pay for a couple hundred races a season within 90 minutes of my house.

Our season here sucks. We started racing 1/12, which is ludicrous if you want to also race in California, and there is nothing of substance after March other than the state championships and the fall TT season where, yes, it can be over 100*. But we do have a glorious late-fall to early spring - right now the riding is fantastic - not even arm warmers if you ride late morning on. During the summer we have a few races up on the cool mountains, and in fact that is how the state RR is being held.

A 2 hour drive from Phoenix gets you up into the cooler altitudes and, IMO, we should do more of that here.

Not a big issue, but for those of you who are not sure what you are, Merriam-Webster defines a "biker" as some one who rides a bicycle or motorcycle. Obviously, in this form, a biker rides a bicycle.

Says the new guy. FYI - no, we do not typically refer to ourselves as 'bikers' here. Bike racers? Yes. Bikers? Only when twisting your right wrist provides lots of acceleration.

Our next 10 day forecast is even colder than the 10 day forecast I posted earlier this week. My son and I cancelled tomorrow's ice fishing outing on Lake Erie as 22 degrees with 35-45 mph winds and 4-6" of snow seemed dangerous to be out 4-7 miles from shore.

Today's ride was a 30' WU then 4 x 9 min HC intervals @ Z4 on the rollers. 117 to 120 rpms seems to be the sweat spot for the HR. Heading out with my wife to the recreation center to do my core/resistance work. I usually do those exercises in the privacy of my basement but today others will seem me suffer. Have to do hang cleans, handstand pushup sets, single leg pistol squats with a stability ball on my back, LaLanne's, then finishing it all with forwards/backwards walking lunges with dumbells. Meat head's will be thinking WTF?

I live in a state that borders Mexico but I'm still more than 500 miles from the border.

As for training, openers at lunch. First races of the season tomorrow. All the young guys on my team are ZOMG!!!! RACING!!! RAAARRR!!! All the old guys are "Dude, chill. You'll be burnt out by May."

I know how you feel, my state boarders West Virginia, but with it's pan handle it's only about 80 miles away.

Opener today... good thing it was that, and not the race. 2 days OTB (Off The Bike) = s t a l e And I still feel the effects of Wed evening's strength work, which had my calves cramping that night. Cramping at night; grabbing something to steady myself every time I stand up... that's when I know I'm training.

And yes, Jet, Flag is awesome in the summer. We have 2 road races there every year, one of which adds a HC the evening before. Then there is a RR in the Show Low area, which is the state RR this year, and it has a crit the next day. A bunch of us also converge on Pine Top each summer for a weekend of long training rides and watching the TdF. Sweet stuff, and just gorgeous.
