Apollo FS26se mountain bike, front quick release stuck

Apollo FS26se mountain bike, front quick release stuck
Hello
I have an apollo fs26se mountain bike where the quick release front lever is stuck, I need to take the wheel off but when trying to turn the lever with my hand or even trying to pull the lever out, it is not moving at all... can I get any tips please on how best to unlock this?
Someone suggested to me that i may need to use a hammer to force the lever to unlock but I have not tried this as surely this will cause long term damage.

"when trying to turn the lever with my hand" DO NOT DO THIS. Turning the lever is NOT how they work. Please review this document:

or do a Web search on "how to use a quick release" and understand how the release is to be used. They are safe if used correctly and unsafe if not.
It is possible that someone forced the lever closed; a pipe as suggested above or lever should be able to open it. Then make sure it is lubricated and moves freely and then adjust it properly. If you are unsure ask for help at a bike shop or get advice from a more experienced friend.
