Stylish Schwinn from Lands' End

We were invited out to the Hamptons for the weekend and our hostess happened to have a new Schwinn Kate in the box in her SUV, that she purchased from Land's End via mail order. Lands' End said she could have it assembled at the KMart for free, but since I had my bike tools with me, I offered to get it ready-to-ride for her.

Very stylish cream and white paint job, white 700c Kendas, and Bamboo fenders and handgrips. Shimano Nexus 3 speed and Tektro long reach cantilevers brakes and levers! Chrome rat trap rack included. There is a corresponding men's model called the Spencer, unfortuantely a small frame only.

Small frame for riders from 5'2". She paid about $475 after tax and coupon. Compared to some of the other retro new bikes out there, I thought this was a pretty nice value!

And it doesn't have a Unicrown fork installed! YEAH! So do you think the fit and finish was pretty good on the bike? Is it a steel frame or aluminium?

I love marketing:

"Lightweight aluminum frame rides smoother, lasts longer than steel"

"From the bike experts we learned that an aluminum frame bests the usual steel: aluminum is lighter, stronger and longer lasting (but the front fork is steel for durability) ."

Yeah, it does seem pretty decent at 500 dollars. It reminds me of dressed up versions of the Coffee and Cream models. Probably not meant for us cheapskate bike nerds, but still a good bike for the masses.

IMHO, fit and finish are a giant step up from the other garden variety Schwinns at the Big Box stores.

I am sure you did a much better job than the kids at Kmart would have done on the assembly. I saw a bike like that bike a Target, too. I forget the price.
