I couldnt resist ...lol
built a Speed Duo with alloy cranks, 46 teeth front 20 rear, rhyno lite 36 hole rear rim, .... nice, very nice... accelerates nicely, goes uphill sitting down ( mostly lol ) rides fast enough in 2nd gear .... its nice. Of course its a little slef promotion but what the heck... :-)

You know you're just a step away from wearing big horned rimmed glasses, retro t-shirts, tight fitting jeans and growing a neck beard... right? So did you fit a SA B2C kickback hub on that? It looks the naz but I've heard so many horror stories about the reliability of those. Hope yours turns out well. But then what does it matter, you have 'spare' parts galore at your disposal.
I often thought about building a bare bones folder to supplement my spartan style fixie needs but then I keep coming to the realization is that the last thing I need is yet another fair weather bike.

Thanks!

The quirks of the S2C is that, you need to shift correctly to engage the 2nd gear or you'll hear grinding noises. I personally like the manual transmission more than the auto-shift as there are times I really like to stay in the high gear to attack steep hills with a bigger gear inch gear.

Great job! Aesthetically I´d go for some more blue accents, since you used it for your crank, but you know, it´s just my opinion. Great way to give it some more uphill ooompf.

Really nice bike! Now tell us about the chain protector: What is the diameter of that plastc tube before and after instalation? (Trying to find out if there is space enough..)
How do you connecty the two ends to make a circle? Is there a plastc clip (that could fall off), is it just cut to size and meet end to end or is there some overlap? Price?
Thank you.

Once solidly in either gear it is great, but too often I find myself struggling to make it shift.
Ultimately, I've decided it just isn't worth it, especially given the extra 1.5 pounds the hub ads to the bike. I've now gone back to the original single-speed wheel. But, I gotta admit, once I get up to speed, I do miss that higher gear!

there are quite a few of those hubs out there.... I am pretty sure that SA will be on top of replacing internals, or find solutions just in case that there is something happen with the hub in the future.... havent heard to many complaints lately ...... and just in case I could include the original wheel in the price as well. :-)

I put an S2C-based wheel on my Mu Uno, and although having the second gear was often very nice, the shifting sucked. It got worse and worse over about 500 miles to the point that it was very hard to get into the low gear at all. Sturmey Archer, much to their credit, provided me with new internals. Unfortunately, after just another couple of hundred miles the poor shifting performance returned.
Once solidly in either gear it is great, but too often I find myself struggling to make it shift.

I really need that high gear because sometimes I'm on a tail wind and the high gear puts me in a 25km/h to 36km/h cruising speed if I pedal really fast. The low gear is used to punch through severe headwind or steeper than 8% grade hills. So yeah, I use the S2C a lot and it takes a LOT of abuse. I suppose I got a good unit. Maybe Bruce Metras did some magic to it before he sold it to me?? Who knows. But if I can get up to 35km/h on a high gear, that's worth the 1.5 extra pounds!

I'd like to more about the chainguard, too. Does it travel around with the chain, or does the chain slide through it? Is it noisy? I was assuming it's just hard plastic flex tubing, but if it were, I can't imagine how it could be an acceptable chain guard because of the noise.
Please more info; a video would be nice.

I had one of these on my Link Uno, and what I do know out of these questions is that the chainguard doesn't connect at the end; it's cut to size. It travels around the chain, and there is no guard on the part of the chain that touches the chainring. It doesn't make noise. If anything, it silences the chain. It's made of soft flexible plastic. I'd have a video but I just traded my Link Uno last night for a much needed laptop. :/
