Moulton bike at Battle Mountain World HPV Speed Challenge
If you haven't heard of it before, there is an annual competition at Battle Mountain, Nevada for speed records on human powered vehicles. It's going on right now. A friend of mine is entered there on a tandem and just (unofficially, pending decision on wind) set a world record for tandems at 70mph!
I also saw a picture of a Moulton there! Someone named Jim Glover on a faired Moulton. He went 40mph yesterday. Does anyone have more information about the rider or the bike?

starting from the SF Presidio in the 80's

I loved this line from the writeup - "The transmission consists of 86 and 82 tooth chainwheels, driving a close-ratio 9, 10, 11, 12 tooth block, thus giving a gear range of 116 - 162".
162" gear inches - just right for the quick trip to the supermarket....

In a parallel thread on the Moulton Yahoo Group, here is what Doug Milliken had to say today..
"Jim Glover and Will Kennedy are both at Battle Mountain, supported by my friend
(and Will's father), Dave Kennedy. They are both riding "Aero" fairings, which
are part fabric and part rigid.
* Jim has one of my Aero IV fairings on my heavily modified AM7. This
combination won a lot of hpv races (in its day) including a 24 hour race with
Gerry Tatrai.
* Will has a similar fairing but assembled by the Kennedys, uses the same belly
pan parts made with the 'Liner molds.
Family business kept me home.
At least one of the pics linked below has an incorrect caption, it confuses the
Aero with the 'Liner. 'Liner II (of three total) is the one that holds the
normal riding position speed record, set at sea level in 1986. It is at the
museum at BoA."

That comment was an inside joke... Mullie sold SCrunch a maroon TSR-30 a few years back.. SCrunch went to England and picked it up personally .. SCrunch now rides recumbents frequently ... great stories buried somewhere in these archives..

Back on topic - my friend just cracked 72 mph on his tandem recumbent. Another world record.

Yes, Phil is my neighbor and friend. I wish he were my riding partner, but he's too fast for me to keep up. There is a century that we like to ride from our house to Santa Cruz and back. It's just under 100 miles and 5,000 ft of climbing. My best time is 5:38, Phil's best is 4:13. That's just a hair under 25 mph for 100 miles with over 5,000 ft of climbing!!! It's not fair.

Hey, I have to break into this thread to say that I attended this year as a spectator and it was a total blast- anybody who gets a chance really ought to go check it out. Since my friend and I were going to be there for a few days, we made it known that we were available to help in any way posible and were promptly drafted into the unofficial volunteer corps. in addition to the boring aspects (traffic control, setting up and taking down signs) they let us in for some of the more exciting stuff too- got to catch for a lot of runs (including the Glowworm), helped out in a few launches, and due to a fortunate communications eror, I even ended up as the radio guy in a chase car for one run- wild stuff! To volunteer (they`re very grateful if you do), just go to any of the post-sesion meetings, which are open to the public. They do a quick discusion of what went wrong and what went right, then read out all the official times for that session, then schedule volunteers for all the needed positions at the next sesion.
All the riders and crews are EXTREMELY open about thier bikes and their methods, very willing to show off their amazing gear and explain how it works to spectators or even to their own competition. Hell, they even help each other with repairs and other problem solving.
