Yah night mtb rides are pretty awesome except in dec and jan when its 50* start and dropping fast. Getting hit by the bushes seem to hurt allot more then normal. Also you get a pretty good collection of different light systems that can be loaned out to buddies.

Tonight- on the edge of town, complete with bike lane. Ended up with 27 miles for a monthly total of 503. Best month in two years.

This is a walking bridge I ride over on the major highway in my town. I'm always a little hesitant in riding over it though because there are signs of graffiti and I would hate to run into someone that would do me harm.

I know what you mean. There's a pedestrian underpass under a rail track that I sometimes use. Same thing, plus sometimes there's glass in there, plus it has a 90 degree bend and you can't see around the corner until you're well into it. It is a nice short cut though when the train is on the the surface level crossing I usually use.

So jealous of you people outside of rural PA and your roads. I was coming home from work the other day and judging the road for biking. There was maybe a foot on either side of the car tires in front of me (car, there are also big rigs, lifted trucks, etc all on every road around me.) The berm of the road (to the right of fog line, "berm" might be a western PA slang term, I don't know) in that photo looks more like a driving lane on my roads. The berm on the side of my roads is maybe a foot wide and often less or non existent even.

That's why I don't, or can't ride on the road. If I was to ride where it appears you are on your bike, my handlebars would be knocking into trees, mailboxes and road signs.

So my friends and I did something really stupid this morning (we started out ride at 6:30 a in the dark...)... in Santa Ana Wind condition (with Red Flag warnings) we decided to explore a new trail in Chino Hills. The ride started out OK enough with several long tough climbs but when we hit the Ridge trail the wind gusts were 40 - 50 miles per hours. It would literally knock you off the bike! I would ride, and then when a gust came up, would stop and just hunker down to wait it out. The singletrack (you see it in the distance) went alot further but we decided to head down a fire road (where those power lines are) and not take any more chances... just as well as turns out I got a flat. Glad I was not on the Ridge when I had to fix it!

That's purdy... hard not to get distracted and keep one's eyes on the road at the same time, sometimes.

You complain of your back country roads, but you say your local roads have fog lines down the side of them. HA! The roads I frequent, include some of the steepest hills around and don't have lines drawn on them. I just ride as far right as I can as long as I stay on the pavement. I rely on the drivers to act responsibly most of the time and not run me down, but we all know what kind of challenge that is. Most of the vehicles that I see are tractors on these local roads, which go slower than your average car but still faster than a bicycle. Going around blind curves or up a steep hill that you can't see what's coming ahead are the worst, but like I said I keep my line to the far right side. Just don't be afraid to take some risks at times. I don't get bent out of shape when I get passed too close by an automobile or even when some immature jackass decides to honk or yell obscenities at me as he or she passes by.

I took these pics on Monday. I rode up Swale Canyon in Klickitat County, WA. It's an old rails to trails trail. It doesn't look like it, but it's very rough and nearly beat me to death on my rigid stumpjumper!

Today I was one of 7 docents (volunteer leaders for Irvine Ranch Conservancy) on a Limestone Canyon Ride. Distance 11.6 miles, 1800' of climbing. Limestone is a closed area. You can ride through it only on a docent led ride so it make it cool as there are no other riders but our group. We saw deer, a tarantula and a bobcat. We had a great turn out - 20 guests and the 7 volunteers; so a large group. We climb up East Loma Ridge and then come down a fun, fast singletrack called "Sandtrap" (and yes aptly named). We travel up the Canyon to The Sinks (Mini Grand Canyon of Orange County) than back down the trail where we turned and climbed up to Limestone Ridge. Limestone Ridge is a fun; at times, scary, singletrack to Raptor. Down Raptor and then finish back on Limestone Canyon.

Perfect weather - started out about 50 and was around 68 when we finished...

I wish I could see your photo jsigone... tonight I do my first actual night ride on dirt trail... I used lights all last winter on bike paths but didn't go off road. I am alittle scared for a million silly reasons... We are climbing up to the Main Divide and coming down there is a steep drop off; hopefully my lights were allow me to figure out where not to go!!!!

Did 3 interesting rides this weekend... Friday I did my first night ride on trail. Not certain if I liked it... even with good lights (2 Nightrider 700) I could not see that well - it was really dark!!!



Saturday I did a nice local MTB ride around the City of Irvine. It was s short ride but lots of climbing... 6.7 miles and 1400' of climbing!


Today I rode with a friend on the Upper Santa Ana River Trail. Pretty much a nice flat 40 miler... lots of riders out - weather was good!
