I tweeted to Perkins and asked him about the gear ratios they use in Keirin racing. His reply: "ratio is between 3.85 up to 4.20! Pace of races change every time, 500m is between 26-30sec!"

Also, a friend told me that Keirin is pronounced "KEE-ding". I think that's right. EDIT: I am corrected below...

I don't know if the KEE-ding is serious?
But as far as I know it's Kay-rin after the countless time's I've heard the Keirin coach at Encino say it.

But regardless, I don't think the takeaway message from carletons post is how to pronounce keirin.

Agreed, with all that padding I'd imagine it would be a little more difficult to sprint especially being top heavy?

My buddy is an American who lived over there. I'm sure that between his so-so Japanese and my bad memory that there is a mispronunciation there.

I guess my point is that it's not "KIR-in" (or even "Kir-E-in") as I've heard many say in the US.

Baby Puke is another American that lived there and he actually raced Keirin. Maybe he can clarify for us!

Keirin, pronounced like kay-ee-reen, three syllables, with the R rolled a bit. Getting pretty tired of hearing people say, "keer-in".

Yeah, but sometimes you just have to pronounce things with a gringo accent. Like, it's okay to say Tour duh France, because it's really irritating to have somebody speaking in their ordinary American accent and then just awkwardly interject "Lay Touuuuur doo Fraaaaahhhhhnnnnnnce."

You ever been to the Keirin class he does on saturdays? He makes it his mission to knock you down, be afraid.

I've never taken the keirin classes nor have I seen the class in session. But hey, if it's coming from an ex-pro then he must be trying to teach some crucial skills. And at his age with all those years of experience and still racing he must be doing something right.
