I plan to but if it is wet tomorrow and/or the warmup does not feel right, I will pull out or start at the back and stay out the way.

The fracture is not that bad, only halfway through so not super structural but I would rather not fall on it for awhile. It is the fun stuff like the tissue, ligaments, and bruising and swelling that I has having more trouble with but that has calmed down so much in the last week.

My main concern is safety and bike handling and that seems to be ok. I know I won't have a good sprint so I plan to either try to get into the last corner (sharp, uphill turn) first and see if I can just power to line alone (about 1/3 mile), or ride at the back and pick off whoever I can. Either way, I want to stay out of the mix. I am putting no pressure on myself to perform but the last race overall was slow at around 60% of my normal training efforts. This is the novice old man category :-)

After this one, there is a long break until my next race.

Took yesterday off. Did a training race wednesday, only lasted about 5 laps.... granted, all 4 of those were off the front. This cold has just drained me. easy rides are now hard. I'm down 3 more pounds, despite eating a ton. And now that I'm over the sickness, I've got a lingering cough.

Just hoping to get back to normal soon so I can start really training again.

I mean, I've been known to do really stupid and manly things like wrestling bears while covered in honey and going to see Sex and the City 2 in the theater and not being embarrassed, so I'm not going to tell you not to race. But it's not going to do you any favors.

If you don't expect to do well and there's a long break to your next race why not just bag it. Ride the trainer for an hour or so a day. You'll stay about the same fitness, and I bet you come back a lot fresher mentally.

Yeah, seriously, for a masters Cat 5 race, why would you race with a broken clavicle? This race will be meaningless in a couple months, even if you win. If, on the other hand, you hit an unseen pothole, or someone chops your wheel, or you roll/blow a tire, you could end up with a full snap, surgery, missed work, blown insurance deductibles, etc. You could also take out someone else b/c of sudden pain/failure. This better judgement is supposed to be why they offer masters cat 5 races.

I was in the same situation this time last season with a broken collarbone and two rib fractures and took a full month off before doing a duathlon. I had a bike race scheduled in the middle but it was cancelled so the situation was taken care of for me.

I really appreciate the advice and you guys are right. I am now leaning more towards not participating. It sometimes takes me awhile to get to the obvious solution.

Went out for a test yesterday, feeling fresh. Disappointed by the results, but glad to have a result to work with. Added in another 10' at (new) threshold. Then another 12' of SST with bursts. SST was supposed to be 20' long, but waaaaah, I was sore.

Road Atlanta or Lime Rock would both be good places for a circuit race. R-A would have a little more climbing than Sea Otter and Lime Rock a little less. I think that car tracks aren't usually the best for bike races, but there are exceptions.

Fixed that for you. I fall into this all the time, not realizing what I'm facing because I'm too involved in whatever it is I'm doing.

It's not the Tour de France. And a Grand Tour is pretty much the only thing even most pros will risk racing with a broken collarbone. Not worth it.

Mtb content, but emily batty raced the olympic xc race with a collarbone cracked all the way through. Note that your cat 4 race in podunk is not the olympics.

Also with all the intensity that I accumulate between track on Tuesday nights and Fiesta Island Worlds on Thursdays, I don't see myself doing a lot of saturday morning group rides for the remainder of this season - weekends will be for longer steady riding.

This is great because it should help my social life - I'm always conflicted about staying out and drinking with friends on a Fri eveining vs staying in and getting up for a group ride; historically I've picked the latter. I started my ride today pretty hungover but by an hour into it I was feeling great and had no problem riding above my z2 goal.

I mowed the lawn. That was enough. Had to mow it twice so I didn't bog down the mower. Ridiculous. I just mowed it last weekend. Growing like crazy.

You don't need to fuss over these things, but there are some general maintenance things you must do. Lubing your drivetrain and staying on top of chain wear is one of those.

And now back to our regularly scheduled program....

I rode my bike for 2hrs last night with wearing only shorts and a jersey. I was actually warm when I climbed out of the valley. Wind was a pain, but that's par for the course around here. It's recovery week so it was basically an endurance ride with some efforts thrown in...Mainly due to the wind...Legs felt a bit heavy, but that makes sense since I had a massage Monday, did a short recovery ride Tuesday and was off on Wednesday.

I'm sure they'll be back to life come race day on Sunday...
Not even my chain I know, I suck at this stuff, 99% of my energy in cycling is towards physically cycling.

3 hours today on the trainer!!! I'm so proud of myself..didn't think it was even remotely possible for me, but it happened. I saved that pvr'd version of the race a few weeks ago where eisel played the drums on that guy's head because I knew with how the weather's been lately, I would be doing a long weekend ride because of SNOW in the middle of APRIL! I'm so po'd right now..

I'm really really really going to regret todays race. Its 29 degrees out right now, going to get breakfast come back and get dressed then ride to the start. So far I've done 3 Threshold workouts this week PLUS a race on Saturday which was all threshold.

I'm going to be cooked.
