Well, this is different - replacement knee ads on TV

I'm sitting here watching the something or other bowl and saw an ad for "getaroundknee.com", brand name Stryker. Something about a round motion instead of oval. I looked up their doctor list and none of them are familiar to me and there weren't that many in the LA area, which got me wondering.

Has anybody heard of these things? The ads are quite amusing.

Has anybody ever gone to a doctor with a particular appliance in mind?

Obviously medical advertising (specifically Big Pharma) is nothing new and is intended to get the patient requesting particular care from his doctor.

Neil, if you see this - did your doctor give you any options on what kind of knee to install?

I met with an orthopedic surgeon before my first hip replacement and he brought out a box of parts and more or less wanted me to pick which new parts to use. That did not inspire confidence. The next doctor I saw told me which one he used and said it was the best one on the market. I went with Doctor #2.

I hear you bigbones- when I ruptured my lisfranc tendon back in 2006 the first guy I went to dithered back and forth about which treatment he wanted to use... the first two options are usually either tying the bones together with wire to let the tendons heal, or screwing them together to let the tendons heal. 10 seconds of that and I hit the road and found a guy who had a definite opinion.

The implants my surgeon used were NextGen Legacy - I don't recall which model. Funny that I'd know the name and model number of my cycling shoes but not that of the replacement parts they stuck in me.

My surgeon has a quarter century of joint replacement experience, so I didn't second guess him. I'd assumed I was getting the Stryker Triathalon, but he prefers the NextGen.

My $0.02

People considering joint replacement should worry less about the type of implant and more about the who is putting it in along with a detailed plan for success to include how to prepare for surgery, what to expect after surgery, PT plans and goals to obtain. A joint replacement is a commitment that will have tremendous long term benefits if all done correctly.

My surgeon told me what implants he uses, why and even some reasons not to use certain implant types. He even told me the reasons to use a particular brand/model over other models in my situation. I felt I got straight and honest answers from him and his associate.

My knee replacement was done Oct 27, 2011 at UCLA. I did PT for 4 months (3 x week with exercises at home everyday) and was cleared for cycling in March 2012. Did my first Century ride in June and have not looked back. Im down 40+ pounds since March and about to drop below the official C/A barrier.

Hmm. Not to thread hijack but I see you weren't cleared to ride outside for six months. I was cleared at 8 weeks but I didn't wind up riding until 17 weeks. Why so long for you?

Thanks for your replies, and of course I agree with the general tenor about who's doing the work. I'm really at the "you'll need a knee when you're 60" stage, and I'm only 44. I can't run (at all!) and walking long distances is excruciating because I'm bone on bone and I have a pretty good case of osteoarthritis, but other than that my knee doesn't particularly limit my routine activities nor my ability to cycle (yet) so this is all very early for me.

Consult with your doctor and a specialist. Don't let your world get smaller if you can.

I certainly will not! My knee doc is top notch but I haven't felt the need to go see him since about 2007. he has the worst bed side manner known to man though... he's like the gold standard in bad beside attitude.

It would be prudent to be very careful of anything with the "Stryker" name on it since this company is in mega legal hot water over their hip joint implants.

Stryker makes a lot of the stretchers the local EMS organizations use. They make alot of medical equipment.

They show a variety of wheeled devices with oval wheels instead of round ones. Bikes, cars, shopping carts, etc. You can imagine the ensuing hilarity.

Unless the doc who did my TKR in 1999 moved from KC to CA, I disagree.

I was born with a rare hereditary bleeding disorder that leads to prolonged post-op bleeding and recovery. Its really hard to get your range of motion back with blood filling your knee. I was the special recipient of even even more PT, regular knee aspirations and daily IV injections to control bleeding - all of which was known in advance and in my post-op plan.

the get around knee, now available at Walmart!! right next to the aluma wallets and chia pets,, these ads dont belong on TV, the surgeon should be the one to discuss the options avalable to you, not the late night infomercial

I must admit that I've never seen an ad for replacement knees, but I suppose it was inevitable.
My better half is going to get his lenses replaced due to the onset of cataracts and looking through the lens brochure I'm almost jealous. There's a deluxe one where you can fix your astigmatism, fix your distance vision, get up-close reading ability...
The doctor has advised him that the second model in the line will be best, fixing just astigmatism and distance. He's excited about being able to go without glasses for the first time since age 7.
All this reminds me of a visit to the back storerooms of the Royal Tyrrell Museum and seeing the cardboard box marked "Tyrannosaur spare parts" up on a shelf.[h=1][/h]

I'm glad you had such care and have been such a spectacular success. Its heartening to read about it. Thanks for sharing here.

I had a Stryker TKR in Aug. of 2005. It's doing great. I ride as much as I want to. I also had my hip done with a DePuy prosthetic. It's doing great also. I agree that finding the right surgeon is the important tip.

the problem with the commercials, not just for this, but for medical devices in general, is patients go in demanding a particular product, even if if it may not be right for them, The commercials need to be directed at the doctors not the general public
