Painting a bike?
Recently got a steal on a Murray bike for $15. The paint is TERRIBLE on it and I'd like to redo it. I've never painted a bike before, and I've heard that a 'clear coat' is needed to keep the paint from scratching and rusting.
I did a quick search online, and couldn't pinpoint what I exactly needed.
Any help with product names/materials and how I should go about this project? I like the paint scheme, and was thinking of just restoring it, instead of going totally new.

Just do it. The nice thing about a $15.00 Murray is you can't lose much by screwing it up. Even then, you'll have learned something so it will never be a complete waste.
I've rattle can painted a bunch of bikes. The only time I got satisfactory results has been when I first used a chemical paint stripper to remove ALL the old paint. That might involve more work and money than you're willing to invest in a $15.00 Murray.

I repainted my frankenbike with rattle can orange. I had success removing the old paint with a a scraper, combined with a plumbing blowtorch for the stubborn or awkward bits. I brush painted the primer coats using some rust-inhibiting primer I had left over (only useful on steel) and then sanded it smooth with progressively finer grades of wet and dry paper.

Agreed. It's best to start out working on cheap bikes. Even if you totally ruin it, you haven't lost much. Take it apart, paint it, put it back together and generally figure out how things work.

I painted my bike with matte black rustoleum. I paint brushed it I put 3 coats on and it turned out ok lol I happy with the paint job..my co workers even commented it looked nice for a brushed bike. I can maybe post a pic.

You should entirely disassemble every piece of the bike yada yada. If you don't bother doing that, keep in mind that aluminum foil works great for covering up seats, chains, and other odd-shaped things you don't want to paint.
