Mystery Bike
Can someone please tell me the name of this bike? I found it on Craigslist, but I can't find any information on it. I am planning on getting it for my first bike. It is carbon and aluminum and the seller says it is somewhere between 1993-1996. Is this a good bike to get?

Trek made a whole series of these bonded carbon bikes in the 1990s, mostly differentiated by the components and the paint colors.
no way of knowing which pieces are original (I never assume components on a bike are original). For instance, RD is one generation of Shimano 600, crankset is another generation. It could be several models in that group. Value is all about condition, so whether its a 2100 or a 2300 does not matter anyway. Same with exact year, whether its 16 years old or 20 years old has no impact on value.
1993 or newer bikes are all on bikepedia. Earlier than that are at the vintage Trek site.
Its not a collectible bike, its a rider. Focus on fit, price and condition, rather than model and year.

If that saddle in the picture is at the correct height for you, then the frame is a bit too small. I would suggest looking for something a little bigger. It'll be more comfortable.

Much more like 1987 or so, much more similar to the 1987 Trek 2500 Composite.
However, the fork is a bit different, I think. I no longer have this, sold it to a bike shop in Texas.
The frame was built by Aegis System, a defense contractor in Maine.
$250 may be OK for your market, but you've got some work to do to bring it to an acceptable leatherneck shine.
I think decals are available. Light as can be, stiff for it's time. That's a 54cm frame, and if you're about 5'7 or under, fine. The seatpost is out way too much.
If it's too small for you, you may need to move on.

Check the carbon tubes very carefully for cracks or bashes. These things can break very easily once the carbon has been damaged. A little scuff in the clearcoat isn't anything to worry about, but if you see any, check those areas very closely.
It appears the the original paint has been chemically removed from the aluminum parts (check out the bits of purple left behind where 'TREK" is cast into the seat cluster); I don't know if a chemical paint stripper does anything to weaken the CF tubes or the joins to the AL tubes, but I'd consider that a possibility.
I've got a purple Trek 2100 from the early 90's; lightest bike I've ever owned. I should put the frame up on the swap thread again; it's too small for me.
