I got my hands on a 1983 Trek 600 in near mint shape a few weeks back. I have had everything apart on it, and serviced all the bearings etc. I also decided to install a Sugino compact crank on it because I'm old and there are a lot of hills around here. I also wanted to keep it fairly original and keep the Suntour BL components. Only thing left are tires and tubes, which are on order. I'm going with some Pasela gumwalls, 700 x 28. I'll have it out for a nice ride before long and I'll get some better pictures then.

Woah, yours looks a lot more red than mine. Maybe it's just the photo. They are good lookin' bikes. I also have mine set up with a compact crank (VO). I'm not that old, but I don't fancy myself a racer, either. I've got 35mm Paselas, and a generator hub and lights on mine. Drivetrain is Shimano Deerheads and Riv Silver bar-end shifters. The bars are Nitto rando and the saddle is a Brooks Pro. I'll post a photo later on (there is a link to older photos of it in my sig, but I have changed it since then).

^How did you get 35's to fit with adequate (~5mm) clearance in back? I tried 35's on mine, way to close to the chain/seat stays for comfort.

I dunno, it just works. Clearance is a little bit tight but I have had no issues with rubbing. These came with 27x1-1/4" tires originally, so 35's are only a little bigger than that. I'll get you a photo when I am home, I didn't ride in to work today.

I can't really photograph it, but I have about 3mm on either side of the tire at the chainstays. The wheel isn't all the way back in the dropouts, either. At the brake bridge I have 5 or 6mm. So it's a little tight but it does work.

The tires should be here later this week. I'll get it outside and get some better pictures then. I rode it about 20 miles when I got it home, then decided to just take it apart and redo everything. Glad I did, the tires looked new, but when I took them off they had some dryrot inside the rims and the grease was pretty cruddy everywhere. I used a Suntour Superbe bottom bracket that had been sitting in the drawer for a while, the length was perfect for the new crank. Everything feels nice and smooth now, can't wait to get it out for a ride.

Great looking bike! I've got one of the 'boring' light blue 600's, and I love it! I have 32mm Bontrager Jones 'cross tires on mine, and the clearance is pretty good.

Very pretty, shiny and red! My old Trek project has BL on it too, which I'm interested in trying out. So far the drive train/shifting have been a bit finicky. I think I may need a new chain. But I hope to have my maiden ride in the next week or so.

OK, the bike is completed, and I took it for a short 2 mile ride around my neighborhood this morning. Everything seems to be working fine, and the ride is nice and comfortable. I'll put some miles on it on the weekend and start breaking in that Brooks. On the short ride, it felt like it won't need much, if any, adjusting. I got a couple of pictures in natural light when I came home.




Just looking at the pictures, I see I need to get out in the yard with a rake pretty soon.
