Gmr ride reports please (4/20/13)

Okay, I've been busy and been lazy so I guess a write up is better late than never ha ha! This was a ride organized by TrojanHorse on the Clydesdale & Athena forum on bike forums. Had a pretty good turn out seeing that VintageDreams & Beachgrad05 invited their all female club running out of VintageDream's female cycling boutique named "The Unlikely Cyclist" in Costa Mesa. Short and sweet, if you want woman's stuff, go there. Gina walked out with 4 pair of cycling shorts in Terry and other female brand she had never heard of till the shop visit. This would have taken her a year to find in other shops.

So a group of 11 women, few Clydes, and some guests, we had a good number of riders heading up. Alyce & Herb, JeepSeaHawk, Aimee, iTrek and his wife Debbie, TrojanHorse, & PhotoJoe. Right away the women took off as I lagged behind with the first timers. Not knowing where they were going or how they were getting there, I stayed with them. Couple miles up we stopped to regroup as the ride had blown apart. Blown apart, just something I picked up watching too many TDF videos ha ha! So anyway, we stopped to rest allowing the tail end to catch back up. Lisa and a couple of her riders had stopped to remove layers or something on the lower slope. Just then Matt rode by them and made some comment about riding topless. For those forum members that don't know, Matt is one crazy funny guy with a good sense of humor and a very friendly encouraging rider that we've met him before on Clyde rides. He is also real good friends with the GMR blogger and a faithful viewer of my blog so he is A-OK in my book!

We speak with Matt for a bit as riders catch up and some just keep on rolling. Mrs iTrek got her groove on and boy did she roll up the mountain. iTrek had stopped to wait for her but she kept a rolling! So did the tail end of the gals from the club. Herb stayed back with iTrek and I for motivation and support. iTrek looked a bit worried a couple of times but I gave him the it'll get better speech. I know he was thinking that I must be nuts but somewhere in his soul he found it to trust our words. Couple more stops along the way. Maybe more because he did not know the road. You know the feeling, stop her cause it hurts only to find out the next section is a strip good enough to recover and catch your breath. But hey, that only comes with knowing the road.

I pointed out to iTrek how relaxed his wife was looking on the road. She was actually a little slower than he was but very relaxed. I figured he'd catch back up to her even if we let her slip a way a bit. Okay so we get further up the mountain and I can see Mrs iTrek up and around the switchbacks. Soooo just how relaxed can she get cause she's pulling away big time. At this point I knew she was gone and we would not catch her but so what! My hat is of to her for doing so well the first time up GMR. I'm not sure I've ever seen another firs timer ride up so comfortable the first time up since Alyce made her GMR debut. iTrek actually looked pretty happy about it and to tell you the truth, so was I. That was only down to earth close to home proof that it can be done. e were far up the mountain now that iTrek had completed the most difficult part, his wife was making it and so would he.

At one point we ran across IndoMikey and his brother JusRelax from the SoCal forum. I turned around to see if they'd stop but they kept going. Then on the steep section before the shack we were caught by Lesper 4. A brief chat and some encouraging words then he flew up the mountain THERE IS THE SHACK! He's made it! iTrek just had to relax now and complete the last little section. Funny though how other riders shouting, clapping and encouraging another rider can lift their energy. iTrek who had at one point shown some doubt in his eyes actually lifted his pace on the last stretch to the shack as the gang from The Unlikely Cyclist hoot and howled, other members and friend cheered and clapped as he completed the climb.

Yes! He made it! We all made it, and really without much trouble at all. The gals from the club are strong. Even the gals at the tail end floated up once they found a rhythm. Of course Alyce the GMR vet made it up no sweat, Aimee, PhotoJoe, JeepSeaHawk all made it up no problem as well. Each has his own obstacle but those obstacles really no longer exist. Even the guys that think they have obstacles like PhotoJoe. He's telling me how he struggled. Umm OK, dude, you flew up the mountain and set a PR! Be proud!

Although in my mind, I felt iTrek struggled up the mountain, I could be wrong. I call it as I see it and for good reason. Not to show who was the last one up the mountain, not to show that I was a gentleman escort but as I told iTrek that riding with a rider that goes against his advantage and helping him is an accomplishment in itself. At one point iTrek suggested we ride ahead without him so that he didn't ruin our ride. I could have gone ahead, I could try to impress myself with a PR but to me, watching a rider dig deep, muster up some courage, then dig a little deeper than before and deeper than he thought he could is quite the experience. Heck, these are the heroes in my eyes! Yeah, those 120 pound guys with 10 lb bikes are bad but let me see a Clyde make the climb with every disadvantage you can throw at him, and he's the Bad Ass! This made my ride. iTrek said thanks for talking him up but I must thank him for showing others that what I say is true. If you want it, you go take it no matter what anybody else says! Just Do It! ;-)

Vntgdreams (sp?) and Beachgrad05

JeepSeaHawk practicing his pose (you'll see why in a bit ha ha)

The Mighty PhotoJoe

Mr & Mrs. iTrek....she rolled her way up cool as a cucumber and he worked it hard. Tough guy, I saw doubt in his eyes but he toughed it out big time. Quite an accomplishment!

Alyce & Herb. She's rolled up this hill like 174 1/2 times already ha ha!

Evil Aimee, she's strong

The gals club out of Vntgdreams shop named "The Unlikely Cyclist". All the women rode VERY well. She's done a good thing!

Most everybody on today's climb

Now for the JeepSeaHawk posing episode. OK, now this guy said he hopes his buddies don't see these pictures. WHAT? What guy in his right mind wouldn't want to pose with all these women ha ha? I think he's going to be the envy of the forum and his buddies ought to worship this dude !

I'm sorry I missed you guys at the top.... I berated PhotoJoe all the way to the top but since I rode from home today (ouch, my legs) I had to take off. Right at about the 72 mile mark my legs quit on me... I was in limp home mode from there. Now I'm curled up in a ball crying. Unbeknownst to me, my pal Jon apparently held the Mulholland Challenge course record for one year. Uh, oops. So we're cruising home and my legs are screaming and he said "OK, i'm going to pull for two minutes and then you go for a bit" and I'm thinking wait, what?

https://app.strava.com/activities/49773499

I started the ride and I was going to hang "back" with HuffinandPuffin - HAHAHAH! That guy is a born climber. I think he said his time to the shack was 1:15, which is downright respectable.

It was nice to welcome iTrek and Mrs iTrek to our little gang of miscreants.

Funniest comment I heard all day - asked when somebody got to the shack "I got here right after the cow" (referring to Aimee's jersey)

Kudos for Vintagedrms for putting that team together, it was fun getting passed by most of them.

I did take some pictures but I have a stack of honeydos to accomplish - I'll add them later tonight.

I don't know who that is but it looks like she's measuring a large fish she just caught. I'm not sure the effect is what Jeep was hoping for.

Translated to simple English - "rode as slow as I possibly could without falling over to keep PhotoJoe company and hopefully see it if he followed through on his threat to pass out". My legs feel great, now that the cramping has stopped! My lungs are toast. I was approaching the point of feeling like I was going to pass out a couple of times and had to stop, but that's life. TH and JeepSeahawk were kind enough to keep me company. It was a hard ride, but felt good to make it.

Meeting the other Unlikely Cyclist ladies was great. Seems like they have a great group! Their group rides must be a blast. I heard someone say they talk like sailors, however, they were all so far ahead of me that I couldn't hear anything. Heck, I couldn't even SEE them most of the time!

All in all, another great day on the mountain. Ski lifts by the end of the year!

Actually it's Ben Bernanke. But you knew that. Buying government securities with monopoly money, hey! What a trick.

We missed you today. Hopefully you'll make it next time!

Aight, here's some photos... there's all stashed here if you want to look closer.

Yes, we saw a peacock (3 of 'em!) on the way to GMR:

The usual view looking back towards LA from the front side of GMR... and no, I don't ever get tired of it.

BeachGrad in a good mood, motoring up GMR:

PhotoJoe scowling along.

JeepSeahawk, Alyce & PhotoJoe near the end

Loads of cyclists out today, got passed by most of them.

Wow what a great ride! I was not out to set PR's (well maybe on the descent just a tad). We had a ton of rookies riding GMR for first time. The team has been training hard since the end of January and working on climbing...hence we put GMR on our "to do" list. When TH started talking about setting up a C/A forum GMR ride...I hoped that Vntgdrms whose shop we ride for...would decide to do this for our training ride this week. And she did! The shop kits arrived also this week so this was their DEBUT! We were styling for sure.

Was nice to meet iTrek and the Mrs. Think we successfully recruited her to come ride out of Vntgdrms shop as part of her riding. She was steady and I was impressed.

Was nice to get some complements and even Beanz-like recognition! At one point H&P told me I needed a new profile pic as I don't look the same. Aww shucks. And Topswing Brother (not sure if that is just a Strava person or if he is also on BF but he asked which one of us was me! and that was pretty cool). I felt like a celebrity! LOL

I took video of the ride and the sound I get with the mount on the handlebars sucks...not sure what my issue is but I hate it so I mute the clips and put music.

Everyone on the team LOVED meeting all the peeps from this forum and significant others and friends such as H & A. This type of group ride is the stuff I ride to do...the friendship and camaraderie makes me warm and fuzzy inside. Honestly...I've missed you guys!!

Now I mentioned we had rookies...several in fact....and darn if pretty much our WHOLE team minus myself, Vntgdrms and two other ladies...didn't just ride up to the shack WITHOUT STOPPING ONCE! I know that is doable but for ROOKIES??? I know these ladies and know how well they ride but I was still IMPRESSED! Beanz says I can do that too...not so sure about that just yet...but I like to enjoy the ride and take pictures such as:

Getting (L to R): Kristina (R), Marni (R) and Vntgdrms (Vet) at the gate:

And handsome "ham" JeepSeahawk (Vet) at a regroup point:

And get iTrek (R) at same spot:

I like to admire the breathtaking views:

I like to get shots of me up on GMR...this kit is AWESOME and so darn flattering!

The team with our kits on (well most of us anyway...as I said they just came in on Wednesday so not everyone had chance to pick them up:

The entire group (minus HuffinandPuffin, TH and his friend of course):

We saw smoke from the parking area and this was taken from my car at the 210/605S interchange:

Was a fabulous ride. We are riding to the Village on 5/19 as a team as our LAST big training ride before La Bella Preme

Ok, this was the funnest ride yet, the smiles after conquering the GMR shack ride for newbies was just awesome. Just to make something clear, Beanz photochopped me in that pose . The ladies did great, my 5th time up and all of them were waiting at the shack when I arrived, think they were fibbing about their climbing skills. Also, confirmed, ladies talk like the guys when alone, well at least when they think they are alone, my bike is very quiet and was following a group of them for a while.
Itrek was a trooper, and like always, Beanz coached him up.
Memorable ride, thanks again everyone.

Topswing brother is JohnR here on this site in the SoCal forum. Great guy and GREAT climber. I believe he and a partner own a course record on the Everest Challenge in the tandem division (2 days nearly 30,000ft of climbing)

he told me his name and we follow each other on Strava...I couldn't recall first name just his last name. Nice guy for sure! It was neat to hear him ask which one of us was "beachgrad05". Pretty cool...like when I ran into NutnBoltman on SGRT that one time and he recognized me from your videos

Great reports and pictures. Sounds like everyone has a pretty good time on those rides.

BeachGrad05, I really liked your pictures. Liked that second mountainous one so well I made it the new wallpaper for my tablet.
