Can juniors use aero bars?

I was trying to figure out if I would be allowed to use aero bars in time trials, I have heard people say I can or can't, but have not found a rule that says I couldn't. So is it allowed?

Regulation 1I5 seems to say that all riders 14 and under are restricted to mass start bicycles, and mass start bicycles as defined in reg 1I1g seems to exclude aerobars. So it looks to me as if you'll have to wait until next year.

But you can totally use an aero helmet, and whatever fast wheels you can borrow; only rule on that is that they must have at least sixteen spokes, so no Hed3 or full disc.

One of my juniors just did Church Creek and beat several other kids by about thirty seconds; no doubt it was due to the TT helmet and Zipp 404 Firecrest wheels.

Go to USA Cycling, download the rule book and read it. Knowing the rules can avoid problems, and you can use the rules to your advantage.

It surprises me the number of people, adults included who have never read the rulebook.

Dude, seriously? Juniors regularly get DQ'd every season, multiple races, for failing to follow the rules. A pile of riders from Dominion got DQ'd at Bikejam for rollout failure. You need to know the rules to the letter.

Take it easy, he's a Junior and he asked. If you went to the startline of a Cat 5 race and asked the riders who read the rulebook you'd get about half of the riders to say they did, and that's after telling them it's required that they do so (this was at a Cat 5 clinic that I ran). Based on some questions most of those half just skimmed the rulebook too.

As a Junior I also only skimmed the rulebook; I was lucky enough to have an understanding friend (a Junior also) who demonstrated to me that I didn't know enough simply by asking me a few questions.

On the other hand there are a lot of Junior specific rules. Juniors should know them inside-out, especially the differences between the various age groups.

I am glad that before I raced any some of the coaches on my team had explained the rollout, and a few other of the basic rules, otherwise I would have been one of the D'Qs(though not at the bikejam).
Cool, maybe we'll see you at Tyson's tomorrow. Big field.
