Gordy Shields, 1918-2013

All good things must end someday. Gordy Shields, a well known and highly regarded San Diego based bicycling enthusiast and advocate and a fine gentleman of Scots descent, has died from complications of otherwise successful heart surgery. At least he got some recognition during his lifetime:

"Shields, a Fletcher Hills resident, was honored nearly a decade ago by way of the $5.2 million Gordy Shields Bridge. Built exclusively for bicyclists and pedestrians, the bridge crosses the Sweetwater River, which divides National City and Chula Vista. The bridge saves from having to go out of their way and use busy city streets."

I go over that bridge almost every weekend. R.I.P Gordy.

Met Gordy thirty years ago as 20-something. I would often still see him riding across the Sunset Cliffs bridge into OB and wave to him. Too bad now that bridge in National City/Chula Vista is the Gordon Shield's Memorial Bridge.
