which Brooks saddle?

yeah, another... I went to wallbikes and read a bunch, but am still not sure.

I'm currently riding a Terry Fly which I like and am thinking of getting another one. If you're familiar with the Fly and Brooks, which Brooks would have a similar design profile?

I'm not fast and do like long rides 50+miles. I want to do several centuries again this summer and want to do a few 125+mile rides. I also do 25-30 mile rides during the week.

TIA!

Get the Brooks Swift. Its got titanium rails. Good looks, too. Comes with Proofide and seat tool at Nashbar.

Have you seen the RIDO saddle?
There is some info on it in the Shameless Promotions thread under the title:
"Inventor/Designer of a radical new saddle."

Personally, if my bars are lower than my stem (road bike) I like the Pro. If it is a more comfort bike position I use the b-17. The two are not interchangeable IMO.

I guess I'm more interested in comfort than aero/performance. I haven't been fitted to my new bike yet, so not sure how it'll finally be set up.

LordOpie,

From what you describe as your riding style I'd have to say B17.
I have both a B17 and Team Pro, and the B17 is far more comfortable
a saddle.
One thing you might check is the width of the fly and match to the closest
Brooks. The Pro and B17 are different widths (about 10mm difference?).

If you're on a road bike with drop bars, you want a narrow-type saddle. I have the Swift, which is like the B.17 Narrow but with Ti rails. Even after 60 or 70 miles I don't have even a hint of discomfort. I would get the saddle at Walbike regardless of price. They have a 6-month guarantee, and they're just a really cool store.

Are you talking about the sit bone area or horn? And yeah, I agree since the width all-around of the Fly seems to work for me.

FLY is Length x Width -- 277mm x 140mm
B17 is Length x Width -- 280mm x 170mm

Couldn't find info about horn width or how either transforms from horn to sit bone area (correct terminology?)

B17 seems much wider than the Fly. Maybe that's a good thing?

The B17 is 170mm wide, the Pro is 160mm wide, and the swift
is 152mm wide the narrowest of all the saddles (along with B17N).

Does 10, or 18 mm make alot of difference? you bet it does.

I thought size didn't matter?

I agree, but how does it matter? Maybe I should add more info about me? I'm 5'10", 200#, not a narrow guy at all. Should I measure the sit bones? Yes, i'm feeling my butt at work

Maybe I should get the B17N?

Tell us how you find the Brooks.
I have a Terry Liberator, that is great for the first hour, but after that, I have to stop and let the blood flow again. I HATE TO STOP.

I started with the Liberator. Great saddle, but way too much padding. This is where I started hating padding or gel, whether in my shorts, saddle, gloves. If the Brooks is as hard as I hear, I'd say you should move to the Fly for a while for the transistion.

for what it's worth - I love the look of my B17. It is however a torture device after 10 miles. I ordered the RIDO and it is the best thing ever in the whole wide world. Looks uncomfy, but all pressure disappears under the Rido saddle. It's not soft, it just does this wonderful thing with weight distribution that makes all the pressure from the perinium go away. Worth it's weigh in gold.

A B17 is a great saddle and the B17 narrow was designed for those of us who prefer something, er, narrower.........

forget titanium rails- and the cost of them- until/unless you are truly addicted. One of the less expensive options should fit your rider profile and your posterior profile;-)

Imagine the fun you're gonna have, trawling through the 268 threads about breaking in Brooks seats, comparing Proofide with neatsfoot oil, nose up, down, or level?

I stopped after the 33 thread

As for "nose up, down, or level" -- are you saying this saddle needs a different type of fit than other saddles?

I have found that if you are a little wide in the posterior, more than 36" waist, the B17 works great.. I have personally never found it to be uncomfortable even though I have them on a racing bike..

If less than 36" waist - either the B17 narrow or Professional.. The champion special version of the B17 takes a little more break in time, just seems a little firmer.

If you want to spend a lot more money then get the Swift..

I don't find this myself- but I've read all those comments when guys report huge comfort gains by tilting the saddle one way or the other. I'm a strictly horizontal saddle positioner............except when it's a Conquest, with springs. All bets are off with that (wonderful) sucker..........!

Remember that the Brooks rails are pretty deep, by modern standards. You'll be showing a little less seat pin, maybe?

If you've never owned a Brooks, start with the B17. Good folks at wallbike have an excellent return policy on Brooks saddles in the unlikely event you don't like it, so don't sweat it.

I did 104 miles last Sunday. My thighs hurt, my calves hurt, my knees hurt, and my achilles tendons STILL hurt. My butt, pampered by a Brooks B17, never hurt.
