Georgia House Bill 689

To all my Georgia riding buddies. If you are not aware, there is a bill that has been introduced that will require the purchase of a license for your bikes. It is HB689. Please take the time to contact your State Reps and let them know we do not want this passed.

There are other provisions such as no more that 4 riders in a pace line and if there are more riders, there must be 50 feet separating each group of 4. Here is a quote from the bill "Persons riding bicycles upon a roadway shall ride single file except on bicycle paths, bicycle lanes, parts of roadways set aside for the exclusive use of bicycles, or when a special event permit issued by a local governing authority permits riding more than single file. Persons riding bicycles upon a roadway shall ride no more than four riders per single file line, and at least four feet shall separate each bicycle. At least 50 feet shall be maintained between each line of four riders at all times."

Here is a link to the bill: https://www.legis.ga.gov/Legislation/...0132014/HB/689

My neighbors keep electing idiots. And unfortunately I live in one of the more enlightened parts of the state.

Thanks for the heads up though.

I forgot to add that you should also contact Lt Gov Casey Cagle about this and ask that he do whatever is in his power to defeat this. He is an avid cyclist so he may be willing to help defeat this.

This bill isn't going anywhere as of yet. It has been posted around Facebook, but several of the activist style groups I ride or stay in contact with say it isn't even on their radar at this time. Hopefully it stays that way.

All three co-sponsors of the bill are from Gainesville. Makes you wonder what is going on in that area that has three politicians so upset about cycling.

Thx Corsarider. I have written my HR Rep, Senator and Cagle.
For other interested parties, I have found the fastest way for me to write legislators is via VoteSmart.org.... put in your full zip (with 4 digit suffix) to make it go even faster.

I too have written and emailed my representative (Christian Coomer) , Senator (Barry Loudermilk), and Cagle. The subject is well covered in the social media and in Georgia advocacy circles. Hopefully, nothing will come of this asinine bill.

Wow. Rapid reply from Lt.Gov.Cagle. He sounds as though he is completely aware of this bill. Regarding the earlier post that he is an an avid cyclist, he even added at the end of his response that he expects to be at the Six Gap in Dahlonega ride this coming weekend.

Word on FB from the public meeting in Gainesville is that the sponsors of HB689 will pull the bill. Great news.
