STI for Me?
I purchased this bottom of the line Fuji last summer to see if I would commit to cycling. I had a blast and bought a new bike a month ago. I would like to keep the Fuji and ride it as a second/winter/beater bike. I would love to upgrade from downtube shifters to STI. Is this possible and reasonable or is too expensive/difficult for the reward. The link below is the info on my bike that should answer any compatibility questions. Thank you for your expertise.

Don't. They're the work of the devil. Give me friction shifters, or give me death!

I installed dt friction shifters on my bianchi. BOOYEA
You should stick with non-sti for a beater/commuter, that way it
a) not be a mass target for theieves
b) crap breaking won't also break your bank.

In my opinion the fancy shifters are a waste of money. But then again I learned to ride about 30 years ago on a home made bike (formerly trike), so I may be coming from a different place than you.
When I went looking for a road bike last year to 'get back into it' I couldn't believe what they were asking for an 'entry level' road bike. They need to take the fancy crap off the bottom end bikes and make the sport a little more accessible. There's no reason they can't build a quality bike for $500 or so, instead they put the fancy STI crap on there & charge a grand.

I have made up my mind, downtubes are good enough for my beater! I think the pain and price are not worth the reward so I will stick to what I have. Thank you all for your input.

The Shimano downtube shifters are light-action shifters. IOW, you don't need to make them too tight. If you insist, you could move to bar-end shifters, but I don,t think I would recommend STI for serious winter riding and/or outside parking. I have no direct experience with it, but I'm afraid of what the innards would look like when shifting at -30 C or on a day with lots of icing rain.

If you were interested in shifters on your bars, but didn't want STI or bar-ends, you could always go with the Kelly Take-Offs or the Paul Thumbies.
Kudos on your decision to keep the downtube shifters, though. I'm a huge fan.
