rough trail tire question
Hello all. This coming spring, I am thinking about riding the great Allegheny trail on my Brompton. Question I have is... The trail has mostly packed gravel and I am wondering if there is a better option for tires than the marathons I have now? Any input would be appreciated. Also, if anyone has completed the trail on a folder, that info would be great as well.
Thanks,
James

I`ve never ridden 16 inch wheels or the GAP, but a recent week-long tour incorporated a few shorter sections of western WA rail trails. My 20 x 1.5 Primo Comets did just fine there. IMO, rocks-roots-ruts or very soft surfaces (mud, loose dirt or deep gravel that tirers sink into) are where the biggest differences between big wheels and little wheels come into play. Dry hardpack doesn`t feel much different between 20s and 26s of comparable width. I`d guess that medium width 16s should be fine too, but hopefully you`ll hear from somebody who knows for sure.

I rode a 90-mile section of the GAP on a Brompton in October and the crushed limestone is almost like pavement. I had plain Marathons and had no problems. The trail is very well maintained.
