Can anyone identify this bike for me?
This bike is for sale, and I am giving it some thought. But I can not identify it specifically. It is described as a "Cannondale Trail SL29 Mountain Bike. For a description it lists:
Frame Size: 19" (L)
Frame Material: Aluminum
Speeds: 24
Suspension: SR Suntour XCT
Rims/Tires: Maddux/29x2.10"
Brakes: Pro-Max disc brakes
Derailleurs: Shimano Alivio/SIS
Rear Cassette: 8
Crankset: Shimano
Shift Type: Trigger
Frame Color: Black
I can't figure out which year it is, or which level model it is. I can't seem to find anything in the Cannondale 2011, 2012, or 2013 catalogs that looks like it. I also have noted that the wheels say "IOC 5.0 Disc" where every other one of this model says "3.0" or "4.5 Disc" in the Cannondale catalogs.
This bike is up for auction and I need to figure out what a fair bid would be. Can anyone tell me what model, what year, and what a fair price might be for this bike?
Thanks in advance.

Looks like it's probably one of the 'Law Enforcement' models.
Have a look at the 'ENFORCEMENT 2 29ER'

Thanks a million folks. Yes, it definitely is the enforcement 2 29er. Now I can figure out what I want to bid. You both have been a great help.

Update: I won the bike. I paid $523.00 for it. I can't find a price on a recent C'dale law enforcement bike anywhere that makes sense. C'dale lists it as a penny under a million bucks. I am thinking that it probably in the 2012 range, but won't know until it gets here and I see the serial number. From what little that I can dig up, it seems like I bought it cheap enough to leave some room for some decent upgrades and probably still have something that might be confused with a bargain.
Konasd - You say that the components are crap. I am very new to this stuff and value your experienced opinion. What would you upgrade on this bike if you were me? I have looked into the Pro-Max brakes and have already determined that they have to go. They are definitely bottom of the heap from what I have read. What about shifters and DR's? From what I can find out on my own, it seems that the Shimano Alivio DR is certainly not the best that Shimano puts out, but is still considered one step above the Deore, which I have on my C'Dale 2003 Adventure 400S Hybrid and can find no fault with after lots of miles. It mentions "SIS" as the second DR. I have no idea what that might be. But I would appreciate your opinions on any of the component set.
I am sixty years old and have no intention of jumping stumps and riding off cliffs. I just want a decent higher-end bike that will allow me to take advantage of the zillion miles of dirt and gravel, pot-hole infested roads around me that my hybrid with skinny tires doesn't like at all. I also like quality and durability, but would never put over two grand into anything that can't drive at least eighty miles an hour, and has doors. I live in Florida and can literally ride every day, which I usually do. My normal routes are getting a little boring, and I have been looking at these dirt roads with longing. They are going to be harder on a bike than the asphalt and cement that I have been restricted to with my other bike. I do put plus or minus a hundred miles a week on my bike, so durability over miles of a bad road is more important to me than ability to absorb landings from any kind of height, or meeting a tree root. I will never be doing any of this.
Thanks in advance for your, or anyone else's help that wishes to share their opinions with me.

on the win racoonbeast, as for the components i would just upgrade top a 1x9 or 1x10 drive train with sram derailleur and go to some hydraulic brakes, that bike does not need top of the line brakes so something like hayes 9 or lower end avids. really anything besides the cables lol. everything else seems fine but its all personal preference. ya also may throw some air coiled lighter forks on. sorry cant really tell in pic but if those are kenda smallblock tyres then they will be just fine for your use.

The bike as it is will be fine for the type of riding you want to do.
Worry about upgrading when things start breaking, wearing out or stop doing the job they're supposed to.

That's a great reply cobba,, I agree. For a commuter its fine and nothing looks beaten or abused. I just do brakes if it were me and replace parts as they go out, and I say that because I hate cable breaks over hydraulics,my personal preference.

I appreciate all of your insight folks. The bike just arrived. It is in amazingly great shape from what I can tell. Almost flawless paint. Parts shiny and new looking. My problem is that it was pretty much completely disassembled prior to shipping, and putting this zillion piece jig-saw puzzle together is above my pay grade at the moment. I am going to take it to my local LBS whom I have some faith in and have him assemble it for me. I will also have him service it ad give it a good going over. If parts need replacing we might as well do it then. I will have him professionally fit it to me while I am there. One stop shopping. I am salivating at the thought of blasting down the road on it, but I have already spent this month's allowance (yes, sixty year olds have allowance too:-) so I have to wait for the first of Feb. But it will be eating up the road soon.

Still kicking.
Hayes 9's were iffy at most when functioning properly enough to the point it was worth spending the extra for the Mags back then, in today's terms mid level mechanicals perform better. For a budget, I'd look at the shimano deore hydros or slx.

Thanks for the info Dannihilator. Could you tell me who might make some decent mid-level mechanicals? I have been reading up on hydros, and they make me a little nervous. I doubt that I would have the slightest idea what to do if there was a problem with them and it would be another expensive trip to the bike shop. Not a problem if they are something that I really could benefit from, but it seems that for my purposes decent mechanical brakes would be more than adequate. I have looked the ones over that are on there. I wouldn't mind tinkering with them. The worst that can happen it that I get in over my head and have to take it to my LBS. I wouldn't touch hydros. They would just automatically go to the LBS.

If anyone cares, I finally got an answer back on my bike after submitting my serial number. I see now why I couldn't find out much on it. There were not many made. I am thinking that considering what I paid for it ($523.00) I probably did okay. It is in brand new shape. Below is their answer:
Thanks for reaching out to us! I was unable to locate any previous communication as well, but I'd be happy to shed some light on what your bike is, when it was built, etc.
You are the owner of a 2013 Cannondale Enforcement 2 29er. This bike was built throughout late 2012 and early 2013, and only produced in limited quantities. There were roughly 500 of these produced for the US market.
Originally designed for the rigors of police use, the Enforcement is a very capable, reliable ride. Think of it as the Ford Crown Victoria of bikes. Simplicity, durability, utility, and ease of maintenance are the name of the game. It's incredibly versatile, making it a beast of a city bike, but remove the rack and change the tires, and you essentially have a mountain bike very similar to our Trail SL series, albeit with components more geared towards taking abuse than light weight.
Hopefully you're enjoying the ride!
Take care,
Brian

Thanks Manny. I think that I might have. You folks have been so helpful, I will pass my "source" on to you. It is an on-line auction site that is not extremely well known. They started out as an auction site for just police departments, and other civil agencies that are required to sell unwanted or unclaimed property at auction. They have grown to include other stuff, but that function is still their backbone. Check it out. Go to propertyroom.com. They say that they have a million signed up members. But, the bidding pressure is nothing like Ebay. You can sign up for free. If you want to bid, you have to register a credit card and give them permission to use it when you win. You should do this at least a couple of days before the auction that you are interested in closes because it takes them that long to verify your card. At least that was my experience. But, man, do they have bikes! It does not look like it from the home page, but just run a search on "bicycle". They sell batches. I have seen batches of three or four to over a hundred go on there for peanuts. The problem with the batches is that, of course, they will not ship them. You have to be near one of their three or four regional warehouses and pick them up. Thus, they do not get much bidding pressure at all. If someone was in the "biz", it might be worth their while to take a road trip to score a hundred bikes for under a hundred bucks. But they will ship single bikes for fifty bucks. Be sure and check out their shipping options before bidding, because sometimes for some special reason they won't ship a single bike. To name a few, I have seen a bunch of Specialized Rock Hoppers go for very little. There has been a run of Cannondale Bad Boys go through in the short time since I discovered them. They have the "lefty" front fork, so I know that they are big bucks bikes. There are one or two on there right now. They seem to go for plus or minus seven hundred to seven hundred and fifty bucks pretty predictably. I don't know what that bike goes for, usually, but that seems reasonable for anything with that fork. Once you win, they ship within a day or two, and it arrives by Fed Ex disassembled, but in "bomb proof" packaging. My package weighed a hundred and ten pounds to give you some idea of how "beefy" it was packaged. I don't know how they can ship for that for fifty bucks, but they do. from end of auction to sitting in my kitchen was under a week. Once it got here, I remained a member but removed my card. I don't like my card number in anyone else's possession if it doesn't need to be.
One cool aspect of this site is that the money that you spend goes back into the American community that it came from, so you are actually performing a civil service.
I hope that this info helps some of you score the bike of your dreams for a price that you might never dream of. I am pretty sure that there are more than a few bike "flippers" using the site. My competition was a guy who was going through and seriously low-balling everything that was worth anything. He lost mine by three bucks, but he was winning others.
Thanks for all the help.
