Schwinn CycleNav

I've not seen anyone mention this, so I'll post it. Schwinn introduced something called CycleNav this week at CES. https://www.schwinnbikes.com/usa/gear/extras/cyclenav/

You need a smart phone? Dumb phones won't work.

Right. Nav is supplied by an app on the phone and I believe it uses the phone's GPS which makes the thingy on the bars just an indicator/speaker.

Actually, an indicator/speaker is what I'm looking for. I have the CueSheet and Ride with GPS apps. Both have good features, but it's hard to hear the instructions and hard to see the indicators when riding fast.

I was excited to find the CycleNav on sale at Walmart tonight (March 13). That's a few hours earlier than the announced date of March 14. It was $49.99, and there were several in stock.

Unfortunately, the Android app is not available yet, and I have an Android phone. I checked the Apple website and found the app there.

Here are my very first impressions:
<> The speaker is loud and clear.
<> The directional arrows look like they will be easy to see.
<> The headlight is better than nothing.
<> The styling is "retro".

I'll post more once I can get the app and actually use it.

I called Schwinn's customer service number this morning. The woman told me that the Android app is expected to be on the Play Store website on Saturday, March 15.

Saturday night (March 15) CycleNav became available on the Google Play Store. However, there was a note on the CycleNav page saying that my phone was not compatible.

I emailed Schwinn, and got a prompt reply. CycleNav requires Bluetooth 4 (aka Bluetooth Low Energy or Bluetooth Smart). Unfortunately, my Samsung Galaxy Skyrocket has Bluetooth 3.

According to Schwinn, 99% of phones two years old or newer do have Bluetooth 4. They mentioned that the CycleNav box has a note saying that Bluetooth 4 is required and that a complete list of compatible devices is available at Bluetooth.com. I don't have the box with me at the moment, so I cannot confirm that. However, I went to Bluetooth.com and could not find an easy-to-use list. I got the information for my phone from a cell phone review website.

In any case, save yourself some time and check if your phone has Bluetooth 4 before buying the CycleNav.

I found a press release on the Hammerhead website (Hammerhead) that says Hammerhead also uses Bluetooth 4.
