Tire pressure questions
What determines the best tire pressure to have? Is there a good rule of thumb, or is it kind of subjective?
I ask because I'm pretty heavy, and I'm inclined to inflate to the tires' max pressure. Is this good or bad?

Google "tire drop" if you want. Experiment yourself if you don't like those recommendations.
as long as you don't get pinch flats, you have enough air.
Tire er size is at least as important as tire inflation, especially for heavier folks like you and me. The tire drop article shows that graphically.

IMO, pressure is the secondary consideration. Start by selecting an appropriate tire width, subject to your frame's tire clearance, then determine the best pressure.
If you look at the car and truck world, heavier vehicles use wider tires with almost no exception. If you go to the tire drop article, look for tires wide enough that optimum pressure is under 100psi, and consider these the narrow limit.

Here are a few links to get you started. IMO many folks use tires which are too small and overinflated in a misguided attempt to get "more speed"; the resulting harsh ride may not improve speed at all and can be fatiguing as well as unpleasant.
