Hi, bought a new Triban5 and went out on it this morning. When I'm in the top 2 gears of the mid range gears, I can hear the chain hitting something but can't see what, feels like the gears aren't aligned properly. Is this something I can fix easily or should I take it back to the shop? Any help very gratefully received.

It's a new bike. It should work. That's what you paid your money for.

If it's displeasing you in a way that you can't figure out on your own, take it back to the guy who sold it to you.

What you may be hearing is the chain dragging on the inside of the large chainring. The dealer may be able to adjust your bike so this doesn't happen but it's is often a permanent problem depending on the drivetrain and frame dimensions. As a general rule, you should not be in those gears anyway. It's called "cross chaining" and the angle is hard on the chain. You can get the same gear ratio in the large chainring and larger cogs.

It's probably hitting the outer plate of the derailleur cage. you need to trim your FD by upshifting but not enough to shift the the big chainring. This document is for Tiagra 9-speed but AFAIK Sora 9-speed works the same way. https://techdocs.shimano.com/media/te...9830670793.pdf.

That trim movement would be in the upshift direction.

Thanks, this is really helpful. No advice was given when I bought the bike. Will give this a go.
