Houston area Rides
Figured I'd start a thread because there are a lot of rides almost every weekend.
I just signed up for the Huntsville Raven's Revenge ride this weekend (3/8).

It's my first ride. I'm both excited and nervous since I am going on my own. My wife can't go.
Anyone else going?
I'm planning on doing the Tour de Houston next weekend too.

Can you pick up your packet the morning of the ride or do you have to get it before - because it's a long way for me up to the Woodlands friday afternoon...

I think you can pick it up the day of the ride. I rode this ride many years ago and registered the day of the ride.

every charity/t-shirt ride I've done will let you pick up your packet the day of, most will let you register day of too but that can be a hassle. It's easier to get the packet ahead of time, but not always convenient. Allow a little extra time for packet pick up on ride day.

Tour de Houston is a great ride, but will be crazy busy at the start. It's a huge crowd. You should register online and go get your packet at city hall ahead of time, don't even think about trying to fight the lines the day of. IIRC, it's one of the few rides that requires an ID to get your packet so you can't ask someone else to pick it up for you.
Parking downtown will be hard with so many people coming in, so allow extra time for that too.

Raven's Revenge was a great time this morning. Lots of hills, which was tiring and my legs are sore but was a very nice change of pace from just flat riding here in the city. I miss the up and down of hills like when I was in Knoxville!
I did the 41 mile route, and despite suicide grey skies, some on and off drizzle, and some chilly wind as the morning went on, it was great. I'm happy to have completed my first ride!
Tour de Houston next weekend. Should be fun riding the streets I drive to work on every day.

@bkj ok we're signed up for the tour de houston this weekend. we're going to do the 40. you probably signed up for the full 60 i imagine. I could do the 60 probably but i didn't want to leave my wife behind. the half way point at the school/rest stop on briar forest is right near our apartment, so if my wife's knee starts to hurt too much she can bail there and just ride the <1 mile home, and i'll finish.
i looked further into parking because i didn't understand what it was saying on the website and discovered they want us parking in the theater district parking garage that's underground and has over 3,000 spots. so i feel much better about that now. so we're going to drive there.

Good. Yes I'm doing the 60 which leaves at 7:30. I forgot about that theater district garage, it's huge so you shouldn't have any trouble. It's a great ride! Have fun & I hope to see you along the way.

I also did the 41 mile route of the Raven Ride. I miss riding hills, but that damn Lake Stubblefield road was a lot rougher than I prefer. I'll be riding the Tour de Houston on Sunday. It's a good ride that tours a different part of Houston every year. If you see me, say hi. I have Longhorn tattoos on my calves.

The head for the hills ride in Chappell Hill is a really nice very hilly (for Southeast Texas) ride. Definitely worth the drive out from Houston. Hopefully the wildflowers will be coming out by then, because it is a prime area for great wildflower viewing. If you want to see what the Ready to Roll training series is like, they are partnering with the Washington County Rotary Club for that ride, so you will see 800-1000 of the folks from that training series out there, and the start will be managed by the R2R folks.

I only saw one lady wipe out from the slick roads. But I did see about 6 people fall over while trying to stop because of their clips. And...I was one of them. My first fall. I was more pissed I fell on the drive side of the bike. Things look OK though.
I couldn't believe how many flats I saw. Those thin slick road tires must be really weak.
My wife bailed at the elementary school rest stop because her knee/IT band was killing her. Luckily we live right behind it so she just went home. I did the 20 miles back to the finish line and the car, raining the whole way. My bike shoes had puddles in them, and I was soaked all the way through everywhere else. But, it was still a good time.

Oh and we were pretty nervous about the amount of lightening we were seeing shortly after starting. Luckily that crap stayed south.
