Please illuminate why this freewheel is a POS, I'd like to know.

However, if your answer is "any freewheel is a POS" then you can save both of our time.

26x23 is a damn low gear... lower than that wouldn't make much sense unless you're riding pitches over 15% or carrying 50 pounds of gear up long climbs. It sounds like you've barely ridden this bike - get some time in the saddle before you start changing things around.

Just do a web search on the brand name and you can find an over abundance of bad reviews.
I don't know if current one is the same, but they also needed an obscure free wheel remover.

I also found some reviews that said that they've listened to complaints and have improved quality in the last 5 years.

But thanks for the heads-up, I'll keep a close eye on this FW. I picked it because it has a reasonably large cog without the huge, 10-tooth jump of the Shimano Mega-range.

I can always go back to the Shimano 13-28 FW; I have a triple up front so I don't absolutely need a giant rear cog.

Thanks for the link- I stand corrected.
For that era though, I'll stand on a free hub.
It is a HG free hub. I recently overhauled my daughter's bike and it has my R400's RSX drive train (no chance of a memory foul up). If anything the RSX is a rugged group.

New riders just haven't enough saddle time to really learn good technique. Once he has some miles in the 28T will likely be used less and less. Until then he will have a very knee friendly gear. And yeah, that granny will be about 1 GI more than one of my touring bikes. What may be of the best benefit is a ~22% drop in GI using the middle ring.

BTW, shimano in recent years, but not now, made a Mega range freewheel in 11-28. i can attest to the fact that they are very high quality. you might find one on ebay if you are lucky. they also made them in up to 32t, i think. i don't recall exactly.
