Gearing questions
I’ve been playing with my CX bike a little off road and have noticed that I tend to run out of gear on the low end (having it in the lowest gears and still really needing something lower.) Using parts I have around the house, I swapped out the chain rings it had (50/36) to a 46/34. I haven’t taken it off road yet but if I still think its geared on the high side, what would be the next logical thing to address, changing chain rings again or focus on the rear? Right now it has a 12-26 9 speed cassette.
I don’t play on racing. Mainly wanting to build this up for light/moderate off road riding (single track, dirt roads, not much gravel, maybe tear across a field to get away from my wife if she ticks me off too much), mild to moderate inclines (there just aren’t a lot of long, steep climbs in the area.) Don’t want to gear it too low though for road riding.

How about a triple crank? 3rd gear smaller than would fit on the compact 110 bcd ... such as a 74 bcd .. 110-74 cranks types are many..

Depending on your RD, I would definitely look for a larger lower cog in the cassette first. Anything from a 30 to a 34 will be way easier than 26.

I found a 32 laying around but its too large. Looking for a 28 or 30.
