Tubing decal placement

What do you consider a standard position for a Columbus, Reynolds, etc. decal?

I've always felt that a bit below the seat stays on the seat tube was the proper place, but there are plenty of variations out there.

I have an '82 Bianchi Nuova Racing that I bought a couple years ago with no tubing decal, but it was easy to find that it is Columbus Tretubi. There's no point in having a Columbus frame if you can't advertise it, so I bought a decal from a good maker on eBay.

Many older Bianchis had the decal just above the DT shifters, but I couldn't bring myself to put mine there. My Nuova Racing does not have seat tube braze-ons for a water bottle, likely because it was cool to have a matching Silca pump mounted there back then. Wouldn't want to cover up the Columbus decal with a pump!

What are your thoughts on decal placement? I know it's not a big deal but I'm curious.

I think a lot of companies used to and some still do use the DT just above the shifters. Most of the early '80s Bianchis seemed to have it there. I have also seen lots of bikes with the decal at the bottom of the ST.

I try and put it where it is period correct.

I've seen them in any number of places, but most commonly on the seat tube just below the top tube, on the seat tube a couple of inches above the BB shell, and more rarely on the down tube a couple of inches above the BB shell.

Most of mine are on the seat tube just below the top tube.

There is no "standard" location - just the specific and peculiar locations used by the various manufacturers for a given period of time.
As BG says, try to go period correct for your Bianchi.

the more important thing is the right decal.

if you're going to sell, placement is important.

but, i'm with you -- centered perfectly, right below the seat lug looks best.

Very true and when in doubt it never hurts to use a respray decal.

Getting it exactly centered is the key. I use thin, 1/8 inch strips of masking tape as guides.

+1 .
Setting up your alignment before you place the decal is critically important. Don't rely on your eyeballs to set it straight!

The decals I've purchased from an Austrailian seller on eBay allow you to spray the area with soapy water and slide the decal into position. Even with that luxury, it's stressful to do a whole frame's worth.

It helps to have some extras...

I tend to use 1" below the seat tube inner lug and 1" below the fork lugs, faint lines for centering. Looks OK and no one bothers me about them.

I think you should place it just above your gear levers like Bianchi did at that time even though you have clamp-on levers:

That's a good point too. Getting your eyeballs, head, inside the triangle to make sure the decal is centered, is no mean feat.

Interestingly, I have seen Chicago Schwinn Paramounts with the Reynolds tubing transfer down low on the seat tube, below the front derailleur band. But most near the top tube.

Some brands located the tubing graphic on the down tube near the head tube. Not my favorite, but authentic for many makes.

I don't have a good picture of mine, but Frejus placed the 531 decal on the top of the toptube just behind the headtube.

My 2010 Schwinn Sprint track bike has the 853 sticker down low on the seat tube centered about 5" above the BB shell.
