Making Burley trailer flag stay put?

Hi,

I have Googled for this, looked on Burley's site, and searched these forums and I haven't been able to find any sign that anyone else has this issue. So I'm asking it here and hoping someone has encountered this or has some advice.

Basically, the flag on my Burley Encore trailer (bought new in 2012) gets pulled out of its socket just a bit after riding for a few minutes. Then it falls over about 45 degrees while staying in the holder. So far it hasn't gotten yanked all the way out, but I do worry about that happening someday. I have tried pushing it into the socket as hard as I can and it's certainly difficult to pull it back out. But it seems the wind on the flag or possibly bumps in the road are enough to dislodge it after just a little riding.

As far as I can tell, there is no securing mechanism; the flag pole is just supposed to be stuck in the socket and stay in place with friction. I've thought about using a screw or something to keep it in place, but I'm not sure how to do that without ruining the flag pole or the socket. I've also thought about wrapping the pole with some tape or something, but haven't tried that yet.

Anyone seen this before, and/or have any ideas for how to fix?

Thanks,
Matt

Bikes: Specialized Tarmac Expert, 2002 TREK 520, Schwinn Mesa WINTER BIKE, Huffy Rock Creek 29er, 1970s-era Ross ten speed. All my bikes are highly modified(except the Tarmac) yet functional, and generally look beat to ****. .

My Nomad lost it's flag and pole within the first few rides, I never found them. Just sayin, if you want to keep it, better find a way to anchor it in there. I would suggest just drilling a very small hole in the pole and pinning it with something.

I have a new encore and a '13 honeybee; they both have the same flag problem you have described.

I was thinking of drilling the flag holder all the way through on a drill press, and fitting some sort of locking collar on the flag pole.

I figure the collar would keep the flag from falling through the holder, and the extra depth for the insertion pocket would provide more stability to the flag.

I am hesitant to drill through the fiberglass pole, as I fear the pole may fracture and splinter.

You could contact Burley about it, they are pretty responsive. I've had the same problem with two Burleys and have just stopped trying. Put a blinky on the back, and call it a day.
