I'm 71 and find myself with a mighty painful right hip after a week of riding about 30 miles a day as part of a European bike and barge trip. I started out on a Giant step-through but one of the other riders thought it was too small for me so I switched to one with a larger frame and higher saddle.

It it possible, or even likely, that my miles in the saddle caused my pain which I think may be bursitis judging from the location?

Just guessing because I haven't seen you riding, but maybe your stroke on your right leg isn't going straight up and down. If your swinging your leg that will happen.

I suspect there's a lot of things wrong with my posture/stroke. I have extraordinarily flat feet and one guy on the trip, an experienced cyclist, diplomatically commented that my feet were not making efficient contact with the pedals.

I am undergoing physical therapy right now for hip bursitis - but definitely not caused by bicycling. It is, instead, a recurring flareup of an old injury. Bicycling is one of the things that I CAN do without pain. But, I would suggest a review by a PT if it continues.

Bursitis in the hip can be very painful. My X-rays show little or no arthritis.

I went through a bout of shoulder bursitis and it was the worst pain I'd ever experienced. A PT helped me a lot so I may be seeing her again if this doesn't improve.

Well, it wasn't bursitis. X-rays revealed no cartilage in my right hip. I'm getting a new one at 5:15 AM CST Monday, Sept. 15.

Good luck with that - a total hip is a routine surgery in hospitals that do more than a few.

It could just be tight hip flexor muscles from increased riding. If I don't stretch them after every ride they wake me up at night with pain when I sleep on my side.

I learned today that "Seat Height" is critical....and if it's too low?...you'll get gobs of lower back movement from side to side with everything scrunching and pinching together with every stroke of the pedals....so if the seats a little too low?...you're crushing stuff...a little too high?...and you're over-extending and unnecessarily stressing stuff....which is why "proper seat height" is critical.

Nurses and PT will be poking you with cattle prods (just kidding) to get you up out of bed and started on your rehab.

Surgery on Monday, walking on Tuesday, going home on Wednesday. Will be on a stationary bike in two weeks and a road bike a few after that. Amazing!

Eight days now since my anterior hip replacement surgery and things are going so well I can scarcely believe it! I'm walking without walker or cane and practically off pain meds.

I could probably be off them altogether but I'm doing 13 different exercises several times a day and I'm pretty sore afterward. But I'll take being sore because I'll be back on my bike a lot sooner than I thought!

Not on my renovated Schwinn yet but doing great otherwise 3 weeks after anterior hip replacement surgery!

I had both hips replaced in 2008. It was a huge improvement for my health. Good luck on your recovery and biking. Glad to see that you are doing well.
